The State requires large floor plates for their offices, about the size of a half a block.
There are some many guidlines when building for the State that it really limits what can
be done. When I and several forumers went to the workshops, we were suprised at
how many guidlines were in place created by the State... tall slim towers were not an option.
If a single tower were to be proposed again, it would look something like this:

Here's a link to the 8 alternatives once proposed.

Ahh yes the Golden State building. That was everyone's favorite back when they were submitting project alternatives. Didn't the state settle on a 2 tower concept back before they pulled the plug because of material costs skyrocketing...

Yep... and the long drawn out process of meeting thousands of guidelines also did not help.
One guideline the State still has not set for it's self here in Sacramento is
to build an attractive building... they can do it in SF or LA but not in Sac

It might be a blessing in disguise for the State to solicit proposals from developers, given its incredible ability to construct the most hideous crap known to mankind. If the City of Sacramento were to be proactive as it was with the CalEPA building, the City would seek a three-way partnership between the State and a private developer to build a decent looking building funded, at least in part, with revenue bonds issued by the City.

The CalEPA building was built by the City of Sacramento for the State using revenue bonds, and the result was not half bad.

Just a quick Monday morning status report: not as large a crew this morning, though it is still pretty early.

The flatbed trailer is gone. Right now two guys are on the north side with the CAT working on some piping or such. A porta-potty has been delivered to the site.

Mr. Fox!! I am smitten to the core!

Of course it is regarding 301 Cap! I have the privilage of watching the progress from my palatial 7th floor office in the Emeral Tower. Long ago, in a land far, far, away... err... I made a vow to never willingly diverge from the topic of the given thread I was in. You can trust that I'll only give 301 updates in the 301 thread.

Yep. They were inspecting the foundation for the south tower crane this morning. There are new wooden walkways to it now. The shrubs are slowly being cleared out and general clean-up continues.

Update.....

Man, what a Friday this has been....

We had a tree on the N and 3rd corner that lost the top half of the main trunk, crushing the poor Kia sedan parked underneath it. And when I say crush, I mean the dang car only stands about three feet high now.

I wish I could bring better news about the activitiy going on right now in the 301 pit. The workers are at this moment moving the fencing on 3rd street back to the old sidewalk, eliminating the staging area there on the east side.

For a place that's closing shop, there is sure a lot of work going on. This morning there are about 20 guys working continuing the clean up including a city inspector truck on site. New equipment includes a second small CAT as well as a small generator trailer.

“As the first order of business, CIM will resolve issues with outstanding creditors and complete the first phase of site preparation and then, over the next 18 months, focus on creating a viable development program for this important site.”

That passage is from a CalPERS press release (released about 6 weeks ago when the Towers officially died). Maybe those workers are completing "Phase 1" - whatever that entails
