If you can consider Etobicoke, Toronto. Sherway Gardens? Can you even take the subway there?

Chinook Centre planning major expansion
One million square feet of mixed-use development in the works

Mario Toneguzzi, Calgary Herald

Quote:
CALGARY — A one-million-square-foot mixed-use expansion is planned for Calgary’s Chinook Centre.

Wayne Barwise, executive vice-president of development for Cadillac Fairview Corporation Limited, said the owner of the popular mall is working on expansion plans for its property right now.

“We have an application into the city for up to a million-square-foot addition which would be a mixed-use addition and that’s currently going through the planning process and so there will no doubt be a lot of public deliberations over the course of the fall and the winter in order to determine what will actually, hopefully, be approved and finally built at some point,” he said while in Calgary on Tuesday.

“At this point, our focus is on the actual Chinook Centre lands ... We’ll be able to share with you exactly where it is once it’s approved.”

Just last week, Terry Napper, general manager at Chinook Centre, said the addition of high-profile American retailers Target and Nordstrom to Chinook Centre will push annual retail sales at the mall to the near $1-billion mark.

IMO, the Chinook area (not just mall - the whole area between Centre and 5th Streets, and 58th and 67th Avenues) should be developed by Calgary as a secondary CBD (i.e. make it a mixed use but business-incentive area) - similar to, say, Toronto's North York City Centre.

yeah man exactly! They already have a Chinook Village TOD plan. So hopefully Macleoud Trail will develop the highrise portion of the secondary CBD.

Yes, Target. Are they going on the new upper floors they're adding on the bottom. I'm assuming at the Yonge Street end although the Bay Street end would make things interesting.

We already have Canadian Tire on Bay. A Target would help kick start Bay as an alternative retail strip to Yonge. Maybe in 20 years it will be solid retail all the way up to Bloor on Bay street.

I wouldn't call it a portrait, but yes it's probably some bullshit HMV or The Bay advertisement.

Going to WEM is like taking a trip to my childhood back in the early 90's.

With all the reflective glass and mullets, more like the mid 80's. I worked at WEM in the early 90's and have full on hate for the place.

Heard that Save-On Foods is opening four locations in Calgary. One will be in Seton next to the new south hospital. The other will be on Macleod as part of the London development.

For me it's that I lived in Edmonton until I was six and a half years old, and I remember going to WEM both back then and many times since. So I associate the place with that particular time in my life. The difference between Chinook in 1994 and Chinook in 2012 is quite stark, by contrast.
