Letchinger said negotiations with the community have brought about several design improvements to the apartment tower. He wouldn't get into specifics, but said groups have asked for a tall, lean design rather than something that sprawls over every available square foot.

JDL Development does shitty buildings. They gave us the lovely Maple Tower on Dearborn Street.

They sure do. Does anyone know what architect they typically use? Whoever it is should have their licensed reviewed. To be quite honest, their work has that design-build lack of quality look to it, so I wouldn't be surprised if they are a design-build shop. It's funny, you can almost sense it - like when you look at Sedgwick Properties' hideous portfolio, you can practically smell the design-build wafting through the cheapness of it all.....I get the same feeling with JDL. Really awful stuff here....

I know - it's extremely refreshing if true that the neighbors actually are demanding tall and thin. I also hope they're demanding much better aesthetics than the initial rendering that was previously posted. It was some pretty grotesque dreck.....again, had a design-build look to it.....

i was just doing my weekly browse through the first page and noticed that 74 & 75 were both 1111 north halsted. They seemed to have two different emporis entries. What is the deal here?

Stellar job as always keeping that thing up to date! It is easily the best summary for any of the city compilations on here or SSC!

By the way... has anyone noticed that we actually have 65 buildings u/c? I know there was some talk previously if we would ever hit 70, but 65 ain't too shabby. (8 in site prep, maybe we stand a chance at 70?)

I love the 1111 Halsted, and I really hope it goes somewhere. Nice design, and really an improvement over that nasty yard that's there now.

Speaking of smaller proposals, here are the two better renders of the Grand Station project. Steely, I noticed that Page 1 still has the old ones - at your convenience, of course!

I didn't really know where else to put this, but while looking at the Museum Park website, in the views section, I came across this picture......




My question is I believe I read somewhere that those god awful train tracks are no longer in use. First, is that even true? And second if they aren't in use, how long have they been vacant? And thirdly, what lovely project will come out of developing them, and any estimates at when they will be looked at for redevelopment.

nope, those tracks are still very much in use by metra electric and south shore railroad commuter trains. there have been desires expressed by some on this forum to see the tracks decked over for more park space, but i don't think there are any viable plans on the table to do so right now.

in addition, i don't find train tracks to be all that "god awful". i mean, i wouldn't protest if the city decided to deck 'em over, but i hardly feel that's a good use of resources at this point in time with the CTA literally falling apart.

That's my condo building on the right of that photo! I live on the 5th floor and have a great north-eastern view.
Word has it, thru our condo management meetings, is that the current devloper and the seller of the land are in a lawsuit battle because the seller now wants to back out of the deal.

Hmmm... thanks. This news will disappoint a lot of people here, but I'm kind of indifferent. I think the existing buildings could be kind of cool if the grey paint were taken off and they were given a nice rehab. The corner one is especially strange for that time period.

Pelli also designed the Overture Center in Madison, WI. The exterior is extremely underwhelming, especially in light of the $200M price tag. Then again, he was saddled with incorporating the facade from an existing historic building, which may have cut into his creativity. But the inside has some interesting spots:

Tomorrow, the Landmarks Commission is due to vote on Preliminary Landmarking of the 37-story Roanoke Building on LaSalle Street.

I've been concerned about this one for a while - no one was talking about tearing down, but it's in need of repair, and the repair needs to be top-notch. Certain unique elements, such as the lightbulb-lit lower corniceline (which hasn't functioned properly in a long while), might have otherwise been lost.
