Nitro Circus Draws Big Crowd, But Few Ride The Bus

Nitro Circus Live was at the Moncton Stadium. The poor transit ridership is hardly a surprise, as the current route system meanders aimlessly through far flung subdivisions in the city, with little apparent coherent thought given to express routing, bus frequency and convenience.

I'm willing to predict a future T&T headline from September of this year:

Keith Urban Draws Big Crowd, But Few Ride The Bus

I will predict that of the 10,000 in attendance at the Urban concert at the events centre that:

8% will be downtowners and people from inner suburbs willing to walk
7% will be out of towners staying in downtown hotels
5% will ride transit
0.1% will ride a bicycle.

and 80% will ride in their vehicles, clogging every legal parking spot (and some illegal ones) in the core, as well as many parking spots in inner residential neighbourhoods.

In other words, don't plan to go to the Keg, the Pump House, the Tide & Boar or any other popular downtown restaurant that evening. There won't be anywhere for you to park............

If you don't get a reservation now, you won't have a chance to eat out because all the restaurants will be jam-packed before and after the concert.

The show is happening on a Wednesday. Most people will be working the day of the show and the day after. Their focus will be on finding a parking spot and leave asap. There will be traffic and clog area, but I think people not attending the show will want to stay away from the area as much as possible.

Now the Chicago show happening the Saturday after, this is where the chaos will truly begin! People who will want to eat Downtown will arrive earlier taking parking spots from people attending the show (who is selling very well btw). Plus theres a UFC event happening in Russia that day, so hardcore fans who want to see it live in the afternoon might head to the bar early.

It's good thing that T&T wrote that article, it could wake up City Counsil into thinking "oh man we are totally not ready for this", and maybe make some route/schedule change so the same article doesnt happens for Keith Urban (and pretty much every shows).

I suspect the cost was a factor for people not taking the shuttle bus. It was $12 per person. On site parking I think was $50. They were also offering parking at the french school on McLaughlin for $15 which is only a few minutes walk.

So if you have a car full of people it was either cheaper or cost about the same to just park at the stadium or close

Holy cow, if the city ever decides to do a shuttle between the Coliseum and the Events Centre, it better not be $12 a person. Can you imagine what that would push the ticket prices to a Wildcats game up to? I can see some downtown lots charging $15 though. And, on site parking? Well there is none, so I won't even go there.

But, yes, the city better wake up. The transit system is NOT capable right now of handling thousands of people efficiently to and from the events centre. It won't be until the routes get more efficient.

As far as downtown restaurants.... on concert nights forget about trying to park to go to a restaurant. Take a taxi. I can see the restaurant owners complaining if there is no regular business and none coming from an event, before or after (ie. people seeing the event and then just going home).

I doubt UFC in Russia will make much impact. Moncton doesnt have much in terms of a sportsbar/scene downtown. Hub sports is borderline but usually is dead. Has identity issues. Old triangle has 1 tiny tv. The gate has no tv's. Pumphouse doesnt show UFC. Places like Boston Pizza, Casino Pub or St Louis away from downtown have defaulted to sportsbars because there is no other choice. With big screen tvs cheaper than ever & costs to drink at a bar higher than ever Id say more people are gathering at someones house to watch big sporting events.

It's not just venue fees that are contributing to that fee. Ticketmaster is notorious for having high services fees compared to most other ticketing services. Whenever I travel and want to see a show, I cringe when I see Ticketmaster is the ticketing source.

yes the venue fee in most cases is like 2.00 the rest is ticketmaster lining some US corporate pockets is all it is.

Hello Vorkuta, Seems like the DEC plaza webcam has been frozen for a few days. I know there is not much to see. Just wondering. I went to the City's webcam page and it is still listed there.

I wish we could get a webcam on the soon to be built Hyatt across the street, but that's a private enterprise and nothing to do with the City.

Yeah, it's going to be relocated very soon, as those poles are coming down for the Hyatt build. It will probably disappear from the website for a while. We don't typically locate onto private property as it gets a bit too complicated access/power wise.

People seems to be waiting for "The Big One", or to see how the parking situation will turn out.

Since they are mostly acts that played before, some people (mostly casual fans) will decide to not go through all the hassle for someone they already saw.

Couple things I find interesting

-If I select that I am coming from Riverview (which I will be) I notice they don't even bother suggesting you can take a bus. . Guess that shows their confidence in our current bus routes from Riverview. I actually would consider this to be a good option if they increase the routes to every 20-30 minutes instead of every hour. That route is as straight forward as it gets.

-The biggest and closest parking lot to the events centre (Heritage court owned lot) is not listed as private or as public parking. This leads me to believe they are still in talks with them. I haven't seen any signs of Heritage putting the gates up yet this summer but they are currently working on fixing the potholes & also painted new parking lines all the way to the back of the lot. It would seem a no brainer for them to put up gates and charge 3-5$ a vehicle during event nights. This lot is virtually empty aside from 20 or so vehicles in the evening.

It's called using a shuttle and is exceptionally common in larger cities. Usually these are shuttles operated by the venue but in other cases event tickets can grant free rides on transit or the transit operator will provide event-specific shuttles. I have CFL tickets for tomorrow in Ottawa and can ride transit for free to/from the game if I wish. Same thing works for Fury/67s tickets. This is on top of park & ride shuttles provided by the team from Carleton U.

Coupla things....

-- I notice that to go to Ottawa Blues Fest, when you buy your ticket, it acts as your bus pass included in the price. Same with the Montreal Grand Prix for that matter, for both the subway and the buses. Gee, what a concept.....

-- If Riverview residents don't find the bus service convenient, they have only to cough up the bucks to make it more convenient. If Riverview wants to pay the cost, they can have a direct line between the events centre and every door in town every two minutes if that's what they want. It's not up to Codiac, it's up to Riverview.

-- I'm not one of those "waiting to see how the parking works out," but I am one of those "waiting for the big one." I'm confident I will find convenient parking downtown. I've been confident all along. If I'm wrong, I'll readily admit it here.

-- What the hell is "Thank You Canada," as seen in the list of events up above?

There's a difference between an event shuttle, and regular transit. They are hoping that people will pay 2.50(in addition of the parking), so it could boost ridership. But it wont help unclog main traffic as people will still have to drive there. Plus if you miss it, it's almost better to walk to the Centre than waiting 15m for the next one. Finally, no mentions of services ending at 6h30 on Sunday.

I know route/schedule can be change, but I dont see the City putting money in it.

And Thank You Canada is a figure skating tour featuring pretty much figure skater who won an Olympic medals in the 15 years.
