Magna finally became a township in 2004. West Valley City took ATK-Thiokol, while Kennecott did some sort of legalese to make sure they couldn't ever be incorporated, which leaves Magna with no tax base, even though it has a population that'll probably push 30,000 in the next census. The only tax base left is two grocery stores, and a dead shopping center at 35th and Bacchus Hwy.

Back to the more serious stuff. I'm very excited about that ski resort being built, I've been wishing we had a ski resort here in the valley I think it's just what we need, alot of people probubly associate Salt Lake with skiing it would be great to have a resort here in the valley. I think it will be especialy nice to have one near Magna it'll probubly help revitalize that part of the valley.

I hope you will make a truck load of money RC14. People like you are the ones who will be building those landmark towers. Let's hope that a couple of those mystery towers will be in the 40-50 range.

Things are building and changing very quickly here along the Wasatch. Look what has happened just in the past ten years, and what will be happening over the next five.

I'm with you on that one RC14, after my first billion I'll build a 50+ tower also. Then we can have two 50+ towers in Salt Lake City, or maybe we could combine our billions on build a 75+ tower. As long as all of you will let me slap the face of Mayor Quimby on the side of it so you all know it's me.

It will be nice when, not if, we hear the announcement for the next highrise. Hamilton Partners is nice but it doesn't scrape the sky like we all want. It will be interesting to see how the CCC Cowboys Partners tower on 1st and State ends up and if it will be the new tallest. Or maybe the mystery glass tower from the CCC proposal plans. I predict that in the next 8 years a proposal will be announced for at least 35+. While not 40-50+ it will be a nice addition.

I had talked early today on the CCC thread about the need for council to amend the current sign ordinance, to allow awnings and blade signs. I mentioned that there is a newly redeveloped street here where I'm at that has become one of the nodes of entertainment and life in the city. Until a few years ago this street was for the most part completely empty. The developer has created this nice entertainment and residential hot spot. All the buildings have about three levels of loft apartments and condos above the restaurants.

The awnings and blade signs really give it a great feel and a welcoming atmosphere.

The street actually closes to traffic in the summer to allow for more outdoor dining, and is one way traffic during the winter.

This is taken from the other end of the street. I love the bowling alley concept. It's a very chic' high end martini bar/sports bar type of a feel, it's a restaurant and a bowling alley. Very nice, always packed.

(KSL News) South Temple, yes the street in downtown Salt Lake City, has been selected as one of the "Ten Great Streets in America."

The American Planning Association chose South Temple based on its quote "historical residential design and craftsmanship, diversity of land uses, the integration of multiple forms of transportation throughout its history, and a commitment on the part of the community to preserve its legacy."

Yes, I like that Future Mayor, maybe add a little landscaping and planters. Something of that nature would be great for the new mid-block streets being brought back in the CCC project. I would actually prefer something like this to the Courts Complex on the Market Street block.

Another great city to emulate when considering signage is London. London commercial signage is really classy throughout it's historic core areas.

On another line, I came across these cool cottages being built in Heber, and thought I would share. I like seeing this kind of warm and inviting craftsman design. These types of homes would make inviting additions to our older inner-city neigborhoods,"verses say your typical monster home."

Glad to hear that S. Temple is being recognized nationally. It is truly a great street. I took my daughter for a walk along S. Temple a few weeks ago and took some photos but never got around to posting them. I guess this news gives me a reason to do so:

yeah I agree it is a GREAT honor. ... Another honor that all Utah should know about (isn't development related) but Dr. Mario Capechi (Biology and Genetics professor) has won the Nobel Prize!!!! What a great man.

thanks for posting that scraperdude. At the risk of reveiling personal info to strangers on the net, I actually work just down the hall from him, and am friends with several people in his lab. He is rather intimidating though; not because he tries to be, it's just that his personality commands respect. We all thought he would win the Nobel, it was just a matter of time. The techniqe he developed is one of the most powerful molecular biology techniques for studying gene function in vivo, and in a mammal at that. It was pretty awsome to be part of the press conference and reception celebration, surreal really.
In a way you could make the argument that this is development related, through several degrees of separation. This honor brings more prestige to the U, which will bring in more research dollars and highly educated people, which could lead to more patents and spinoff companies and thus an increasingly productive economy.

I can't belive how open it is with crossroads gone, and it'll probubly be even worse When they finish demolishing ZCMI.

while the design is nicer than usual, it is my opinion that the garages, in some of the renderings, are too prominent. Also, some of the "cottages" do not interact well with the street. Notice where most of the walkways lead: to the driveway, not the sidewalk. Though it may not be obvious, this design reinforces, in our subconscious, this idea that the automobile is higher on the "food chain," if you will, than the pedestrian.

You made a great point on that Urban Boy. I like the designs except for that same driveway issue that you mentioned. These would be great designs for inner city infill projects if they altered them slightly to orient the front door to the street. Maybe detach the garage with a rear lot placement with either access from the street or from the alley.
