As if people aren't already discouraged to come downtown.

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/loc...urce=d-tiles-2

I would understand if the city imposed a 2 hour parking limit in the evening to 8 or 9 PM, but charging for it as well!?

There are many negatives against downtown. This just adds to the list.

At least it doesn't go as far as Garry so I can still go to The Pint for a pint.

That reminds me, when I went there a couple of weeks ago three of the four parking ticket dispensers on that block were not working.

They approved it, but only for a relatively small area surrounding the MTS Centre.

Charging for parking makes sense in the daytime when demand exceeds supply, but it is crazy to do it in the evening when on most any non-MTS Centre event night you could fire a cannon down most downtown streets and not hit any parked cars.

There are so few reasons to go downtown in the evening as it is.. reducing the amount of free parking that's available will only discourage people from doing that.

So stupid. Just because you are offended doesn't make it right to censor others.

I sure hope those who were offended weren't posting "Je suis Charlie" on their Facebook and Twitter feeds earlier.

The city has absolutely no tact at all. This is the oldest negotiating trick in the book.

Everybody knew it was just an opportunity to gouge MTS Centre patrons, but they tried to play it off like businesses all over the area were looking for turnover, so they expanded the boundaries all the way to Garry and all the way to Kennedy. Which businesses? Nobody's sure. Maybe the Don Restaurant. Anyway, ten minutes into the meeting the boundaries were shrunk to include just the immediate vicinity around the MTS Centre and everybody is claiming partial victory. The city just asked for something unrealistic so they could get what they really wanted which was to charge for parking around the MTS Centre.

Which, short-sighted as the city tends to be, is just dumb. People actively spite downtown as it is.

Yeah, I'd agree it was pretty clear they just wanted some MTS Centre parking revenue. It would obviously create a logistical nightmare to charge for downtown parking only on event nights, though.

If I had a restaurant close to MTS Centre, I'd be pretty upset with this. It will be even tougher for them to draw customers on non-event nights now. Who's going to pay to park to go to Moxies (and risk getting a ticket) when they could go to one at Polo Park instead?

Yeah, this is the point sensible people are making. Is Boston Pizza in Cityplace really worth going to over a suburban location? I don't doubt a lot of people planning to eat out were doing so downtown in an effort to get free on-street parking. If I know I have to pay, I'll just eat where I want and park in a pay lot when I'm done. It doesn't make any sense. There aren't even any destination restaurants in the immediate vicinity. I can't get the same awful food the E & C serves anywhere else?

I guess that the people that live in the apartments / condo's downtown near MTS center won't be having guests over for dinner as they would have to pay for parking on the street to visit.

Living in the East Exchange I'd prefer evening pay parking as then my dinner guests could actually find a place to park.

Me too... It's not like an extra $4 in parking is going to stop me from going to a friends place. The fact that I have to walk from Argyle to get to your place on nights that theatre is on pisses me off way more than a few dollars.

Maybe convince your condo board to pay for a vallet?

I know that this is pretty much the stock urbanist response to this issue, but the reality is that people make decisions at the margin. It's the laws of economics at work. People will pay the parking fees on Jets game nights and big concert nights because downtown pretty much has a monopoly on those events in this city. The other 300 or so nights it's going to be tough sledding, because frankly there isn't a lot at the corner of Donald and St. Mary's that's worth paying 4 bucks for parking on a random Wednesday night.

Paid parking is a rational response to high demand ("there aren't enough spaces for everyone so we'll rent them to the people who need them the most, i.e. those who will pay the posted rates"), but it doesn't make much sense when you have trouble convincing anyone to come in the first place. It's like a restaurant responding to a lack of clientele by jacking up prices. Good luck.

All this noise about charging a very small amount for on-street evening parking is pointless. I am downtown in the evening two-four nights ever week. On non-game/event nights the place is dead, charging for parking isn't going to suddenly make that worse. On event/game nights, good luck finding an on-street spot after 5:45 pm anywhere in the downtown area until well after the event is done.

Personally, I think if the issue is promoting turn over of on-street parking setting a two hour maximum and issuing $50 over-time tickets to offenders would get the message out better than the current structure. The enforcement of the time limit could then be stepped up significantly on event/game nights and target hot spots. On those quiet nights the ticket crews could have the night off. After getting a ticket for parking on the street that is far more than it would have cost to park in a lot people would quickly get the message.

Walking a few blocks to a friend's house because there is no parking pisses you off? Are you the same Steve-o who just a few months ago was lamenting that more Winnipeggers don't walk 10 to 15 minutes with bags of groceries in their hands.

Perhaps it's a bit of cognitive dissonance, but at the same time, I don't want to leave my car out in the middle of nowhere when I do decide to use it.

Winnipeg really takes it on the chin in the latest Maclean's with a cover story about racism and shoddy treatment of indigenous people. The sensational headline implies that we're Canada's most racist city, but the article itself raises a lot of compelling examples of why this city really is divided, centered mainly on Tina Fontaine's death. A little more civic introspection on that front certainly can't hurt.
