Wonder if that's the only one that would be in Vancouver, I've only heard of those existing in supertalls.

"At the top of the 48-storey One Wall Centre there are two “tuned liquid column dampers” (TLCDs), each consisting of water tanks 16 m long x 4.5 m wide x about 8 m tall, extending nearly the full width of the tower. Within each tank is a long horizontal chamber at the bottom and two columns of water at each end.

The dampers work by allowing the water to move back and forth along the bottom chamber of the tank and up into the columns of water. When the building moves under wind loading, the water moves back and forth, transferring its momentum to the building and counteracting the effects of wind vibration." Canadian Consulting Engineer

How many parking spots allotted to unicorns?

Building sway would also be impacted by floorplate size/width.

One Wall is pretty skinny.
Not sure about The Charleson - maybe the triangular floorplate creates an issue (but what about Shangri-la?).

Article about One Wall's tuned damper

Shangri-la

Quote:
The stepped tower core design, which reflects the three primary building functions and the triangular building mass, evolved from close collaboration between the architects and our office. This core was able to achieve the ISO-suggested wind motion limits without the use of supplemental mechanical or hydraulic damping. The lack of damping devices allows freedom of space for the architect and landscape architect to plan for private sky gardens with individual lap pools for the penthouse residences.
https://dialogdesign.ca/projects/liv...-la-vancouver/

Quote:
The development of the project began with a cast-inplace concrete structural system. The tower structure is
supported on a 3.6-m deep raft, and pad foundations of
various depths on sandstone. The project set a construction
record in Vancouver for the deepest excavation (26 m) at
the time. Moving upwards, its stepped-tower core design
reflects the primary building functions and the triangular
building mass. The building lateral system is a ductilecoupling stepped-core that houses nine elevators and
stairs with steps occurring at Level 17 – the top of hotel,
and at Level 46, with three elevators terminating at each
step. Core-wall thickness and concrete strength range from
1.5 m to 0.3 m, and 70 MPa to 40 MPa respectively from
the base to the top of the building. The wall thickness,
coupling-beam stiffness and concrete strength were tuned
to meet the ISO suggested wind-motion limits, without the
use of supplemental mechanical or hydraulic damping to
free up precious penthouse space that made a private rooftop garden and an infinity pool possible. Not surprisingly,
the core steps create uneven stress distribution, hence wall
thicknesses were selected so as to minimize the gravity induced lateral demand.

Keeping that Randall building facade is silly. It ruins the cohesiveness of the rest of the project.

They should just enclose it within that white facade treatment and have it peeking through one of those cutouts.

It looks like there can be some incredible winds going through those pass throughs.

I think it just looks that way for the rendering most of the spaces fronting the other streets are just listed as retail CRUs.

I think this other flythrough video is also new (birds eye view) and was posted two weeks ago

I wonder what would happen to the Harbour Center lookout if this gets built. This is more than twice as high up and just a few blocks down the street.

There's definitely some potential for strong winds during the odd storm, but by and large, Vancouver is not a very windy city. I think it ranks first or second as the least-windy city in the country.

Scotia tower looks so tiny beside it. What a monster
