I forgot about that one. Good find, but the three tiered one was different. I'm not sure, but i think this one was in between the three tiered version and the built wall.

I guess its more of a two tier design with a massive parking deck, but that is the one I'm thinking of.

Thank you for posting this. What a missed opportunity compared to that wall we have downtown.

I agree. But as I remember, the main reason the red building didn't get approved was because of its height. Because of its location it would have blocked the view of the Tower of the Americas from Alamo Plaza, or at least overshadowed it.

The Great Wall of San Antonio was designed to prevent that as a response. It has the lower end (with the pool on top) which is also set back from Market Street.

... thus allowing for the unimpeded view of the TOA. (This is the closest I could get on Google Maps, but you get the idea.)

No. That is unequivocally untrue. The “no building can be taller than the TOA or block it’s views” is a myth. That convention center hotel was proposed prior to 9/11. When 9/11 happened it caused tourism to come crashing down, it was then dropped. That’s the reason it never got built.

Wouldn't that have been this one?

Either way, I feel we're getting off-topic on this structure...

Yes. That’s the pre 9/11 proposal. When I first clicked on the other link it was a dead link and thought they were talking about this Sheraton proposal. Re-clicked it and saw it was the multi colored “cd shelf stand” proposal that I was a big fan of.

Needless to say, the height wasn’t the reason it changed. This was proposed by a different group from the one selected.

Well, I've been put in my place. Don't I feel like a schmuck? (No, I don't. But thanks for trying.)

OK, so apparently I was wrong. That's why I said, "... as I remember..." Next time, maybe try to correct someone with a little more civility. And with that said, have a nice day.

A little of the history here:

https://www.hotel-online.com/wp-content/...PR2004_4th/Dec04_SanAnotonioCCHotel.html

I don't remember each of the three competing bids that were mulled over after Sheraton/Starwood could not get financing, but I'm pretty sure the one we got was the least attractive.

On a side note, here is a thread about some SA projects that never broke ground. Unfortunately, some of the pics are no longer available on the site, but still kind of interesting:

This is all great, but we are really getting off track here. I think the above link could go in the off topic thread or metro thread.

We gotta do something to fill the time until there's actual news about this building.

I figured if that's the case, a moderator can move the discussion. I decided to post directly to Jack.

You're probably correct though.

After months of no news, the first hint at construction might have appeared. Txdot has put up signs advising that Soledad Street between Travis and Pecan will be closed beginning on 1-17-21.

Awesome! Does anyone know how to look up the FAA filing for tower cranes on this? Are there going to be 1 or 2?

None that I could find since last year except this one from last April. It listed the work schedule as 07/30/2021 to 06/30/2023, but I don't put too much stock into FAA dates.

I would think two cranes. This building is really long, stretching from Pecan to Travis.
The Frost had two, the Arts Thompson had two and the new Jefferson Bank had two.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up having three. Two for the tower sections with one of those working on the shorter setback, in addition to the main tower section, and a third crane for the podium along Main Street.
