dang, that's gorgeous...a skyline changer.
I have little confidence in it being built tho. The developer has never done anything like this. I sure hope it goes through tho...looks incredible.

Ripple... the cheapo "wine" of the 70s, whose namesake is brought to you in a 2010s-20s condo. I really hope that's not the case.

Build the damn thing and make it good looking. And truly kick off the development of downtown's NE parking lot wasteland into something great.

Pointedly different. Looks like stackable kitchen storage. Or maybe the love child of a landlocked cruise ship and a desk organizer (which can work out okay).

Given the name, would be nice to have something a little more ripply. Or wavy.

And yes, some will have retro associations, such as this or this.

Kinda disappointed they changed the first story pillars and the long screen thingie.. those pillars are probably just gonna be generic sono tube filled concrete.. It just always kills me that something that would be so simple to be decorative always is the least focused on.

I am loving that tiered rooftop patio though..

also that park has an awful lot of concrete area..

but eh.. a) we'll see how it looks b) we'll see how long this building remains white looking. It may not age well in our climate. Yellowing - dirt streaking, graffiti-ing..

Also I swear, you people are never happy with anything proposed in this city.. some of us are just happy anything is being proposed at ALL.

I'm also glad this has basement parking - all of these should have basement parking or camouflaged parking.

Agreed that the roof and the basement look nice.

I don't think that it's unreasonable to make note of potential shortcomings of a given project (such as the temporarily white cladding) or identify invisible frictions (such as the very active fire hall directly across the park) or subtly misleading framing (such as colourizing John/Rebecca Park to make it seem as if it's a dedicated condo amenity).

Or to register subjective aesthetic feedback.

Maybe I put too much stock in the architects' promise of a "very sculptural", "very important visual presence". Both claims are admittedly broad enough as to be meaningless.

But it's certainly nice to have more residential density in the core, and the render looks nicer than a decaying bus station.

DPAI:

RIPPLE RESIDENCE
Type: Private, Residential, Urbanism
Client: Sonoma Homes
Collaborators: Wellings Planning, Adesso Design
Size: 35,000 sqm
Location: Hamilton, ON
Status: In-Progress

Ripple is a mixed use residential tower proposed to redefine the existing contextual fabric of the site and work integrally with the future park planned for the block immediately to the south of the property.

The building defines a complete edge of the future planned John/Rebecca park, and is designed to create a visually compelling organic backdrop to its activities. The mass of the building is divided into a mid-rise portion on the west and a tower portion on the east which are formally tied with continuous cantilevered balconies around each floor. The curvilinear balcony guards establish a formal horizontality composing the façade as a natural landscape.

The ground floor is transparent allowing direct connection and flow of the commercial uses into the future park. The space immediately outside of the commercial spaces is generous to provide significant opportunity for outdoor patio and retail spaces during favourable weather conditions. These activities will help to activate the north edge of the park with continuous activity. Further emphasizing the connection is proposing transforming Rebecca street into a “Woonerf” condition, where curbs would be eliminated, allowing the building edge to meet a continuous plane of the public space into the park.

The development includes 313 dwelling units, 205 parking spaces on two underground and one above ground levels, 13,000 SF of leasable commercial space, and rooftop amenity spaces. Vehicular circulation for the site has been designed away from the woonerf by designing access via Catharine Street for all vehicles entering the site for parking, loading, deliveries, or garbage removal.

It's awesome that they have designed this building specifically to work with the park - that's a great and novel concept for this age - back in the day a lot ob buildings were designed with their surroundings in mind.

I have to wonder how these people are going to enjoy the sirens of the fire station going off though hehe.. hope they invested in some soundproofing.. or how people enjoying the park are going to enjoy that - esp. women with kids and babies..

Also they should coat the white on the building with a substance that doesn't allow paint to adhere to it so that any tagging will just roll off.

I still love the concept of full grown trees on the roof - I hope they use all those roof "jutouts" as it's a great way to give space back to nature.

FWIW, here's Sonoma's current condo build at 125 Wilson East, slated for occupancy in spring 2020.

Eh better than nothing I suppose. .I just hate how everyone adds a "finish" instead of a "design" - what ever happened to combining stone with wood and brick like the old mansions of yore - everything just feels so pre-fab nowadays.

I live nearby, and our bedroom faces John where they regularly drive sirens blaring. You get used to it. Our 80s windows actually do a decent job of stopping the sound too, so with decent windows it wouldn't be too bad.

Let's hope they design it with that in mind.

Hamilton Fire's stats just came out. Station 1 on John Street did 6686 runs in 2018. A little more than 18 runs a day.

I do have to say, that station is absolutely gorgeous. It still looks new - the stone work on it has been beautifully preserved. Hopefully they eventually fix up the building beside it properly.

Says the guy who nit-picks about cornices and window treatments and such.

Nice touch following up a few posts later...

I think most of us here are excited to see the changes. The city went through decades of not much going on. Now that a veritable "boom" is happening it's wonderful to see, and I can't speak for anyone else but I hope to see wonderful visual results coming from that boom too.

As for this particular development, I wonder if they'll go back and challenge to add some of the height that was compromised, given the shift in provincial development legislation. And it's really only the name I find funny.

I hear the concerns of gentrification and think we should do something about it. At the same time it is exciting to be getting more middle class people downtown, shopping and making these businesses fill up.

I've noticed that downtown is packed nowadays certain nights with people from all over the city.

My own thought, UGLY, LOL ... wrinkles on a pug .... I totally dislike the design .... just may show one does not need a university education to be an architect ..... a set of lego, a source of heat and a bottle of wine would achieve the same .....

I just don't have much to say anymore. I got burned out on the bad times during Hamilton and just glad this is happening. It does look like the design got chopped down bad. This building would have brilliant lines if it was 10 floors taller, like originally planned. But it got Thorned.
