It would be interesting to see if the FAA filings/determinations are consistent with the reported height of completed buildings like Austonian, Frost, W, NorthShore, etc...

^I'm confident of the heights we have for Austin. I've been able to verify them with Google Earth. I know some people have questioned Google Earth's accuracy in the past, but I'm confident of it when I'm seeing the same numbers the architects, developers and City of Austin are listing.

The imagery Google Earth uses is raw photographs taken with satellites and is then digitally imaged so that it can be 3D.

That was not what I was inquiring. I was curious to prove whether or not to trust the FAA heights. I don't, for some reason.

Thus, does the FAA determination for the Austonian say 683'; Frost 515'; etc.?

Frost Bank Tower

Building - 518 feet - https://oeaaa.faa.gov/oeaaa/external...=314913&row=19

Crane - 610 feet - https://oeaaa.faa.gov/oeaaa/external...D=314846&row=4

I also just measured it with Google Earth, and it measured 518 feet. The 516 foot height we have for it is from an email I got from the developer. He said it's 515 feet and either 9 or 11 inches tall.

I'll check for The Austonian later.

After looking further into FAA height limits, it turns out that projects listed as an "Interim Case" do have a preliminary issue with their height. There is a search set up specifically for Interim Cases on the FAA search page, so finding such projects is easy. Block 71 is currently the only Austin project listed as an Interim case. But an Interim determination is not final, the proposed height could still be approved.

Here is an explanation for Interim Cases from an aviation consultant firm:

http://www.wacaz.com/services/obstru...esumed-hazard/

Here's a quote:
Quote:
The difficulty for the FAA specialist issuing the Notice of Presumed Hazard is that often the existing database is incomplete and they have not considered mitigating factors such as the effects of existing structures, terrain or other pertinent issues.
I would think that means nearby structures of a similar height like Frost could lead to an approval. But the new FAA filing for a 481' foot tower makes me think Trammell Crow may have decided to lower the height instead of proceeding with the current plans.

For what it's worth, here's a new CBRE listing for Block 71 at it's 555' height and ~680K sq. ft. of leasable space. Floors 16-36 are available:

One thing to note is that even though the Frost Bank Tower is only about 1,000 feet away, the Block 71 site is up to 38 feet higher than the lowest point on Frost's block.

But it's also only two blocks from 600 Guadalupe which got approved for 847'. I believe 600 Guadalupe also spent some time as an Interim case before it eventually got approved.

They are going quick, if the bigger cruncher were working all day yesterday (repair truck there all day Thursday) I think they would be done today but almost.

Too bad that view is going away, though. There are some neat sightlines in that area.

It's great to see such rapid progress. I really hope they stick with the original implosion plans to take down the office building. We also need some resolution on the FAA decision about the height. There's not a huge difference between 481' and 555'. But 555' will poke through our height plateau.

I think Gensler is starting to present a common theme now that I look at this building. Looking at their proposals for Block 185, the hypothetical hotel next to the fairmont, 600 Guad, the courthouse spot, and now this, all of the buildings have looked strikingly similar, albeit with minor changes around them

I honestly can't see them lowering the height of this building. Remember it was only going to be a few feet shorter than Frost then was bumped up to 555'. It's gotta be around that height.

481' compared to 555' very much make a difference especially when you consider what part of DT this will be built. 555 would be very striking on the skyline as a whole because as Kevin pointed out Its 34 feet higher in elevation than Frost. Even more so compared to the Austonian or Independent so it would go a long way in giving the skyline height variation. 481 is eh... Okay better than a spot on 400 footer but there is no reason why it has to be shortend. I say lets stick to the 555' for now since that is the height that the developer is stating.
