After reading 427MM's post about the diaphragm wall I thought I understood what was going on at the site. But this morning I saw a tower crane piece being delivered. Now I'm confused again. It can be seen from the webcam:

If you check the construction cam now they're assembling a crawler crane. This makes sense with what 427MM was saying and with the drawing The ATX posted. The crane is even red like the one in the drawing. ha

Yeah that looks like the concrete is just a base to drive the crane onto and have sold support for the legs. If its pivot is near the center of the property then they could reach the whole property with never needing to move the crane.

Are diaphragm walls common in Austin? I wouldn't think so. It seems they are only used in really wet/spongy areas (like Boston) and from what I know Austin has the complete opposite of that. Maybe they are doing top down construction for this one?

Here's a very basic "top-down" construction video for Dummies. I became less dumb after watching it. It's quicker than the normal excavation first type of construction. Fifth & West should have used this method.

I changed the status to U/C despite the fact that no support columns have yet been built. There have been convoys of cement trucks during the past week for the diaphragm wall construction.

The ground breaking ceremony for this hotel will be tomorrow if anyone wants to stop by. Apparently they are burying a pig and cooking it underground on the lot to be eaten at the ceremony.

Maybe they'll raise a palm tree when it tops out.

So all that equipment in the middle on top of said concrete pad. Looks like their own concrete mixing plant. Or is it something else?

There is a lot going on at this site. All the activity is even more impressive when watching it from street level.

FAA crane permit - it's indicating two - 485 feet.

Here's the crane drawing showing the tallest height at 208' and 485'.

I just realized that the 485 foot height is the "hook height". The actual height of the crane is 548 feet. If you look, they have a line from the base to top that says 607 feet, but you have to subtract 59 feet from the baseline number at the foot of the crane.

It looks like excavation is almost ready to start. The equipment used for building the diaphragm walls has been removed from the site. I'm not a construction expert, but I still don't understand the benefit of top down construction at this particular site.

The value is that you pay to remove the risk of building in an area with a high water table. More upfront costs but also more certainty.

I just checked the construction camera and it looks like the temporary cranes were hauled off this morning. Some concrete slab supporting one of the cranes has also been destroyed. I don't know what any of this means but I wonder if this means the project will soon rise up.
