Welcome to the James Beard Hotel?
Wendy Culverwell
Real Estate Daily editor- Portland Business Journal

The James Beard Public Market will weave its way through the Morrison Bridge ramps, linked by a skybridge to a 17-story commercial building across the Max tracks.

But what will the tower contain?

Hotel rooms, office space or a combination of both.

“I could easily see two uses,” said Dan Petrusich, president of Melvin Mark Development Co., which is leading the efforts to create a market and commercial tower at the west end of the Morrison Bridge.

The possibility the market could be paired with a full-service hotel is a fresh twist in the 12-year campaign to bring a food market to the heart of Portland.

Saw this in the news the other day:

James Beard Public Market takes center stage

Friday is an auspicious day in the long saga of the Historic Portland Public Market Foundation’s effort to build an indoor, year-round market.
It holds a pair of events to kick off a $25 million campaign to purchase a site at the Morrison Bridgehead.

Now the hard part begins for backers of the James Beard Public Market.

Portland foodies, real estate developers and civic leaders munched paella and salmon cakes and sipped Oregon wines and brew Friday evening, to formally kick off a $25 million fundraising campaign on the site of the planned year-round food emporium west of the Morrison bridgehead.

Movement on the James Beard Public Market. I think this would be a great project for Portland, but I'll believe it when I see it:

As the developers in charge of creating Portland's long-awaited James Beard Public Market ramp up their work, details are beginning to take shape about how the market will look, who will shop there, and what vendors will hawk.

During a meeting to update the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners about the $30 million project, the market's executive director released some new information about the massive indoor-outdoor food market planned for the west end of the Morrison Bridge.

Multnomah County leaders have agreed to sell the 3.12-acre site to Melvin Mark Companies and nonprofit James Beard Public Market Foundation for $10.4 million. Currently, parking lots occupy the space.
...continues at the Oregonian.

I am warming up to this potential project, my biggest issue that I don't know if it has been corrected is that this public market isn't connected to the farmer's market. I would love to see this be built, but I don't want it to be a glorified food court.

I may be an optimist here, but I would think that in Portland, of all cities, there is room for both to exist.

James Beard Public Market | Proposal

Was looking at the James Beard Public Market website, which is at least reassuringly active. This is a project I would really like to see happen. Currently timeline is Community Outreach / Concept Development through 2015, building design through 2016, and construction through 2018. Full details in the concept book.

The city really should get rid of those off ramps.

Yeah, it seems like in the very least, they could get rid the beginning and ends of them -- for instance the one leading off of the bridge could just connect to Stark on at the northwest corner, instead of wrapping all the way around to Naito. It seems like with that, you would still be able to get traffic to Naito pretty efficiently, and you would gain a much nicer street edge on the north and east edges of that lot. Actually it seems like a no-brainer.

I'm not entirely convinced, but I sure am hopeful about this one. I would LOVE to see a giant statue directly in front of the proposed tower site at the head of the Morrison Bridge. That would be marvelous.

A statue, or something else potentially iconic to serve as a giant Welcome To Portland.

I'd love to see the proposed tower jump over 1st Ave and come to a point (like the Flatiron Building in NY) on the triangle between the bridge ramps. THAT would be iconic.

And added bonus.... it would hide more of that green neon abortion on top of the building next door.

Yeah why would they not move Portlandia there, and finally away from its hidden-away location on 5th?

Would love to see this project move foward, hopefully it would revitalize the waterfront area in general.

Because the artist won't allow it. He retained copyright control and insists the statue stay in front of the Portland Building. The statue won't enter the public domain until 70 years after his death.

That is just crazy, what would happen if the Portland Building was torn down?

Not sure how that would affect it. There was a long discussion of this issue on reddit/r/portland about a month ago, you might search there for more details.

Portlandia at the James Beard Public Market?

Owning the copyright doesn't give one the right to dictate how or where something is displayed, unless the work is somehow distorted, mutilated, or otherwise treated in a disparaging way (17 USC Section 106A). I don't think simply moving Portlandia to another location would need the artist's permission unless there is some contractual agreement with him that the statue would always be displayed along the bus mall at the Portland Building.

screwing around with works of art is a slippery slope.

leave it where it is. if the building gets demolished then find a new location. until that happens (unlikely) hands off.

if someone wants an iconic statue at one of the bridgeheads then start a committee and advocate for something NEW. something that's designed for that specific site, wherever it may be.

Ok, it looks like I misremembered the part about moving it. I know I've heard that somewhere, but maybe it's not due to copyright.
