I feel like this is a justified sacrifice to add more density in a well-connected area.

There is a triangle grass lot across the street between Clifton and the 405 that could have easily been a serious density infill that wouldn't have required to tear down three beautiful 100 year old houses.

That lot should be developed, too, in that case.

I would rather not see three beautiful 100 year old houses torn down.

That's owned by the City of Portland, and is what's left of the southern end of the Park Blocks. Prior to the freeway there used to be a park block between SW Clifton and Jackson as well.

Never knew that, but it makes sense. Would be a nice spot for a freeway cap restoration/extension of the South Park Blocks, a la Freeway Park in Seattle, but much smaller and cheaper.

Oh wow, thanks, I never knew that. I figured it was just some leftover space when the 405 went in, but didn't know it was originally connected to the park blocks. Kind of makes the houses on Clifton a little more special knowing they were at the southern end of the Park Blocks.

Since it was mentioned, does anyone know if the City has long-term plans to cap 405? I get that the Albina Vision better meets the City's equity goals, but it seems there is a lot to gain by reconnecting Lair Hill and Goose Hollow with Downtown and the Pearl.

Nothing recently. There are very detailed plans on how to cap the Stadium Freeway should they decide to fund and do it. I'm not at a place to pull out those reports right now, believe it was during Vera's time, but they're out there. Last serious proposal was to build a parking garage across from the Crystal Ballroom with a sports field on the roof in 2002 or 2003 if my memory serves me right.

While Vera Katz was mayor, there was a large model near the entrance to the council chambers in City Hall showing the extent of the proposed I-405 cap.

930 SW Gibbs Redevelopment (4 Blocks) - Pre-Application Conference

Quote:
A Pre-Application Conference to discuss a proposal to develop a mixed use project on Marquam Hill that combines several separate parcels and creates mutiple buildings. Parking is proposed and shared throughout the site. Several options will be discussed: a Comprehensive Plan/Zone Map Amendment to change some lots from RM3 to CM2 and a Planned Development Review. A Design Review would be required in the future. The focus will be on allowed heights and floor area.

It's crazy that like 90% of that photo is new buildings.

I'm going to try and get out more this summer to take photos. Gives me something I like to do while getting some exercise.
