If the TWN or Musqueam or Tsawwassen or any FN group wants to open a cultural/convention centre somewhere by all means, but it's kind of weird to assume they want to or ought to run something like that.

PCC is owned by LDS AND connected to their campus. Most (all?) of the employees are LDS members from Polynesian countries. They come and work at the centre and get free or heavily discounted education.

That being said, it's actually pretty good.

Something I'd love to see in Vancouver is something that has been in Seattle for at least 30 years, and that is ..
Coffee shops where they combine coffee, socialising, ... and ... a small cultural element such as literature readings, or chamber music.
We have had a parallel in Vancouver when (years ago with my American cousins) we were in the HSBC lobby with people having coffee listening to a chamber music quartet.
This is a great city, and we can do so much with it. I'd love to take it higher, and see it infused with higher cultural awarenes, at the public level, in some way.

City Council approved a new 2,000 to 9,000 seat covered amphitheatre at the PNE. The new facility is costing $69.7m and the number of events is expected to increase from 5 a year to 49.

*sigh* Yes, I know what you mean. I think you're being very unfair to Vin. He seems to be suggesting we should have a full-sized historic steam train running in Stanley Park, and why not? Obviously you'd have to cut down a few trees, and it might cost quite a lot of the Park Board budget, but really, you're not thinking big here. (It could have a railway-themed mall too).

Heck, for that kind of time/money/effort, the Parks Board might as well scrap the vintage trains altogether and give Stanley Park a monorail over to Prospect Point or Second Beach. Much better than a cheap kiddie ride.

I believe the decline of CoV industrial lands has also had the secondary effect of causing a decline in the underground music scene. Not too many empty warehouses anymore.

Much like a magic act, Cabaret Bijou disappeared without a trace.

In October 2022, a week before the cirque-style performance, marketed as a "gourmet cabaret" with a four-course dinner was meant to open to the public - poof! - it was cancelled.

The event's website was replaced with a landing page announcing the temporary suspension of ticket sales due to "corporate restructuring." The page apologized for any inconvenience and promised that more information would follow soon. Since then, there have been no further updates and the website now displays a 503 error message. Their Instagram account says: "The Show is Suspended Indefinitely."

At the time, Cabaret Bijou organizers also sent out a press release that stated: "Sadly, due to technical challenges, the show opening will be delayed. More information will follow soon, once new dates are announced."...

....Now, nearly a year later, increasingly frustrated ticket holders remain in the dark as to what went wrong or if they'll ever see a refund.

Opinion: Museum of Vancouver or Royal BC Museum should take over Vancouver Art Gallery's existing building

...The Museum of Vancouver (MOV) should be the obvious frontrunner for the consideration of taking over the existing home of the VAG.

Currently, the civic museum, wholly owned by the City of Vancouver and operated by a non-profit organization, is located at Vanier Park in Kitsilano Point. Since 1967, the MOV has been located in a landmark building with a roof shape inspired by a First Nations woven basket hat.

The idea of moving out of Kitsilano and into the VAG is not a new idea either. In 2013, the MOV began studying options for relocating to a new location in downtown Vancouver, and the former courthouse building was top of mind. This was the same year Vancouver City Council approved the VAG’s relocation plans and a 99-year nominal lease for about half of the City-owned Larwill parking lot for the new purpose-built development...

Only if there's a natural history wing and an FN wing, otherwise I don't see how the MoV's current half-hour display will fill an entire courthouse.

... The VAG’s relocation to its new purpose-built home and the subsequent relocation of MOV to the former courthouse building could theoretically trigger a wider reshuffle of Vancouver’s museum attractions. It could enable more opportunities for new and improved museum attractions in the city.

H.R. MacMillan Space Centre could conceivably take over MOV’s space, becoming the sole tenant of the museum building at Vanier Park — enabling a major expansion of its very cramped exhibition space to showcase more about the universe, our planet, and space exploration, including Canada’s contributions.

Alternatively, the MOV’s existing space could be repurposed into a First Nations history museum, which takes advantage of the synergies with the adjacent Senakw development on reserve. Vanier Park and its existing museum buildings could be reframed as an Indigenous cultural precinct of the Squamish First Nation, which would provide a meaningful measure for reconciliation while also adding to the City’s attraction offerings.

As a further measure to establish an Indigenous cultural precinct, a relocation of the Space Centre to a significant expansion of Science World would provide a win-win for both of these science museum non-profit organizations, given the obvious synergies. Perhaps even a merger is not out of the question.

The co-located Space Centre and planetarium could be built on the footprint of Science World’s Ken Spencer Science Park, which is closed for much of each year — only open seasonally between March and October. A replacement outdoor science park could be built on the rooftop of Science World’s Space Centre building expansion, making much better use of the limited land area...

Maybe remember how hard it was to fund the new VAG in the first place?

... What. No. An annex in a completely different city is the wrong solution for Royal BC, rebuild or not.
