What's the current state of the density transfers for heritage restorations? Is that why its been in that condition for so long?

I think it's all relative - that's a 26 year time span.
So 26 years before 1984 would be 1958 - and I think there'd probably be alot of difference between 1958 and 1984 too (just on the other side of downtown).

That "new" shot is about five years old at least - you can still see a roof on the Plaza of Nations.

From a postcard in my collection, 1900 block Nelson Street looking toward Stanley Park. I'd guess circa 1900-1910:

If anyone is interested, not sure if it has been posted yet... here's a nice place to search for old Vancouver photos.

http://www3.vpl.vancouver.bc.ca/spe/histphotos/

For example, search for Marine Building pics, and you'll see everything before and after its construction. Here's a nice one.

Wow. What a coincidence... I was just recently searching for historical photos of the neighborhood I grew up in. I used to live across from the Convent (St. George's) on 29th Ave, and Lord Byng was my high school. Really fascinating seeing the beginnings of how things developed way back then.

The VPL does have some excellent photos but their website could be more user-friendly, as far as searching goes. The Vancouver Archives recently upgraded and it makes searching much more user-friendly.

Photo history of the first Hotels Vancouver, from some postcards in my collection.

The original, farmhouse-like 1st Hotel Vancouver at Georgia & Granville, showing the incongruous 1903 Italianate Howe Street addition, designed by Rattenbury, at right.

A CPR postcard showing the never-built Rattenbury H-plan hotel. We are now looking from Georgia and Howe, with the 1903 wing in the foreground, and the planned companion wing at left:

The true second Hotel Vancouver. If you look closely you can see the 1903 wing at far right. Its planned matching wing grew several additional stories, then the centre part of the H was filled in with the flamboyant Edwardian tower. All in all, a fascinating story of early Vancouver's explosive growth told in one building!

The City of Vancouver Archives has digitized the William John Moore panoramic photos. You can find them on Flickr here:

Make sure to view them in the original size. Amazing!

Even the inset photo date is incorrect. By 1984 site prep was well underway for the Expo site...I know this because I was employed by Expo from 1983-1986.

I know Whalleyboy is not responsible for the incorrect dates in this photo...not sure why anyone would date these pics incorrectly. Don't know what purpose that would serve.

Too wide to paste into the thread, but there's an amazing 360 panorama of downtown Vancouver in the 1920's from the roof of the second Hotel Vancouver here (you have to scroll around a bit):

That was amazing! What a shame that the city lost so many of its original buildings (including the building where the picture was taken which remains the biggest loss in the city's history).

I think the question of what that is came up earlier in the thread. Given its bulk, lack of detail, and odd location, my guess is a huge water tower of some kind. Can't be a grain terminal on that shallow part of the creek.

Incidentally, if you wonder why False Creek flats would be bad location for a new St. Paul check out some of these panos of the area. It was a total marshy mudflat in its original state.

They are amazing shots, I like this one of 33rd & Arbutus. A different city, but with strangely familiar sites. Strange to think that everyone in that photo would be long dead.

interesting .... must be a oil or water storage facility for sure .... probably water and maybe was used before they build the tunnel across Burrard Inlet to bring in water from the North Shore Vancouver ... ?

regardless ... INTERESTING ... and ODD.

yes someone commented on it earlier but no one followed up ...

can be seen here as well >>

Source: CBC Archive
&

Source: CBC Archive

so it lasted ... INTO the 60's .... and seems to have gone up in the mid 50's. (seems to be under construction in the 1956 pic)

ALSO .... looking at the last pic more .... maybe the structure was in the way of the new Viaduct/Highway plan .... and that's why it came down ... as the 2 "new" viaducts are more or less right in its area .... I say new as you see the old one there still
