I actually saw an episode of Globe Trekker last weekend where they visited these. Amazingly because they were going to flood the area with a lake from the construction of a new dam, it would have submerged these statues and temple completely. The statues are 65 feet tall. So they actually took the thing apart block by block and built an artificial mountain some ways away and rebuilt it there.

The Wikipedia page for it explains it.

Incredible! Really beautiful. God I wish American cities had torn out more pages from European ones. That kind of structure would be perfect in Texas during the summer.

Er, Kevin, Egypt is not in Europe. And we do have Mt. Rushmore to honor our gods in stone, albeit it isn't in Texas.

Yep, Leadenhall Market. It would be a great alternative to skywalks or tunnels. We have both of those in Texas, but no street arcades. We'd still get the natural light, (great since we have tons of sun in Texas), and would still have street level activity inside and outside of it. I'm not criticizing what we have of course, just saying I wish they had experimented more with street arcades.

Rotterdam has a really cool skyline. It's a little spread out... but impressive nonetheless.
