$20 Christmas trees returned/recycled for $20 gift cards! What better deal can anyone ask for???? (BTW, is Ikea still doing that? It's been a couple of years since I lived in Cowtown.)

It's not the responsibility of an academic who studies retailing for a living to strut around like a civic "booster" arguing against all the evidence that a city can support retail operations that it almost certainly cannot.

No worries, Andy. I know you mean well in your views about Winnipeg, as I believe you truly care about the city, just in a different manner I guess. I will always believe in a bigger and better city myself, opposite from you in mega-opolis Toronto. Although I don't for the life of me understand how someone who really doesn't care for larger cities lives in Toronto. Boggles my mind!

To each there own

As an example for those unaware of how big 300,000 sq ft is, the standard Home Depot or Rona are approximately 110,000 sq ft. IKEA's are huge.

I think Eaton's was on the order of 600,000 sq. ft.

The thing about IKEA is that it is the store as well as the warehouse, which may skew the numbers somewhat.

What I want to know is what makes Sterling Lyon such an attractive place to set up shop. I mean, I guess it's sort of a natural fit if the plan is to turn Kenaston into some giant big-box strip but other than this possible Ikea, what's there ? Better yet, why are we creating yet another power-center ? Good grief , if this is how Ikea plans to enter the Winnipeg market, I hope they're going to acknowledge that they're not being a good corporate citizen if they're just adding to the disaster that is power-centres.

It is everywhere now in the news here. IKEA has put an offer in on the piece of property we have spoken about.

IKEA to set up shop on Kenaston
CJOB's Jeff Braun reporting
12/16/2008

IKEA has announced it will open a store in Winnipeg.

The Swedish furniture giant signed an agreement to acquire a large piece of land at Kenaston Boulevard and Sterling Lyon Parkway.

However, whether or not the store gets built is conditional upon municipal and provincial government approvals. But, both Premier Gary Doer and Mayor Sam Katz have pledged to accelerate capital plans to meet IKEA's timelines.

Madeleine Löwenborg- Frick tells CJOB it might take a couple of years before it opens.

She estimates it will open between late 2011 and early 2013.

The proposed store would be 350-thousand square feet, making it among the largest stores in Canada.

So much for a 'scaled down' version.

They are talking about the total development of 1.5 million sq ft including the IKEA???? That is a lot of space. I can imagine that where other developers are finding it hard to find tenants that this development will have people lined up to be in the same location as this consumer magnet.

^ true. I would be willing to bet that Polo Park will become a development dead zone while this IKEA anchored area is going up.

This will become extremely visible once the old empty stadium site joins the old empty arena site, in addition to the glut of soon to be empty NEFCO furniture stores.

There could be a hotel going up at the site plus there are plans for a large residential development to fill out the area. It's a very ambitious plan.

Eaton's was closer to 800,000 sq ft., I believe.

This location is exactly where IKEA would want to be. It's a big box store, so I'm not sure what else anyone could have been expecting in terms of location.

Is "IKEA" really swedish for "crappy furniture"?

how close is that to the rapid transit line or are they betting on the city building a offshoot that way?
