I'm sorry but the shangri la is a disappointing building. It's tall which is awesome but the building is so Vancouver with all that blue greenish glass. Sheraton still blows it away looks wise.

actually i quite like the glass. while it is still blue-green, it is far darker than other buildings in Vancouver. It also has a more futuristic looking facade on two of the sides, unlike the normal Vancouver condo tower.

Awesome picture, Delirium. From that angle in Stanley Park, Shangri-la is front center in the skyline.

Global 1 had a really nice shot of the Shangri-La last night. The crane was only just a little bit taller than the building =P

Drove by the Shangri-la yesterday and was surprised by how 'short' it appears to be @ it's current 54 stories (approximate) ... let me explain ... having recently seen Calgary's Bankers Hall @ 197 meters and Petro Can Tower @ 215 meters I couldn't believe tha Shangri-la will soon top out @ the same height as Bankers Hall and only about 18 meters shorter than Petro Can. What I'm getting at is the bulky massing of the noted Calgary office towers (particularly Petro Can) gives them the 'appearance' (optical illusion) of being much taller than Shangri-la.

So what is the story on the squares? Are they just for a daytime effect?

Most likely they will be able to light up certain squares to emulate shapes and wording for special events etc. During the Olympics probably emulating action sports figures to showcase certain events or, a happy face, Marry Christmas, Happy New Year and stuff like that.

Hmm I would think it would have an opposite effect, as a more slender building would appear taller proportionally. Keep in mind there is still alot more height to come. Not only have the floors not topped out but the mechanical fins have to be added on top of that height so its still no where near being topped out.

Shangri-la does have sort of an optical illusion, i've noticed when driving across lions gate it really stands out, and the slim effect makes it seem really tall, but when ur coming up georgia it looks really stubby, maybe it's all the surrounding buildings...

It is taller than One Wall center given the fact that Wall Center is on higher ground elevation too. I counted 55 completed floors and to the top of construction they are beginning floor 56. It is also taller than the Harbour Center spire's airspace. The Harbour Center is 558 ft to the spire. Shangrila should be now about 550 ft tall. That is 30 ft taller than the observation deck of the Space Needle in Seattle. When the 56th floor is completed Shangrila will be the tallest freestanding structure in the city. In otherwords...just one more floor.

first you say it is taller than Wall Center than you say it has another floor to go to be tallest?

How come Emporis has Shangri-La listed as 201m and 62 floors?

Towerguy3 might be able to redeem himself afterall.
Everybody start getting your apologies ready.

If there is any truth to Emporis's numbers that would be awesome. An actual 200m tower has so much more appeal than an almost 200m tower. It would also push it to the 3rd tallest tower in Canada outside of Toronto upon completion (after PetroCan and 1000 Gauchetiere), although not for long. A trivial matter though I know.

It's nice to dream.
Emporis doesn't have a good reputation when it comes to cold hard facts. It's like the wikipedia of urban development websites.

The orange-vest guy is probably the editor at Emporis.

It's kind of odd for Emporis to change their figures though. Last time I was on in October, shangri-la was listed at 61 and 197 meters. And the updates in construction status has been bang on.

I hope they're right. And I hope Shangri-la can pull the fast one on the city without anyone noticing.
