They did have the drilling machine on site not to long ago, so maybe there waiting for the next step once SXSW is over. I'll also swing by sometime next week to talk with one of the construction workers or supervisors who I normally see on site when I drive by there.

This is kind of what I meant. The project not picking up steam by some arbitrary date is not a reason to be concerned. There is no reason to be concerned until some *actual information* comes out that indicates that the project is in trouble. Until then, there is no reason to believe that this project will not be built.

I heard a rumor from a couple of different sources that they are trying to sell the land. That would mean no Hotel ZaZa, but it would also mean it gets traded to someone else who might actually build something on it. Just a rumor at this point.

Well that's a shame. Something must have really fallen through for them but at least they didn't start building then stop leaving an unfinished shell as some have done.

Let's all speculate wildly on what could take Zaza's place. Be as absurd as you like. I'll go first: Waldorf Astoria.

I'm disappointed as I was looking forward to Zaza being at that location, but on the bright side this could pave the way for maybe an even taller tower that has a smaller footprint, moving it away from the Plaza Lofts. My guess is that this land will look attractive to developers because it's already cleared and now there's a track record of a sizeable structure being approved for the site. I bet this one will be swooped up for an office tower, because that market is really hot right now. Residential tower to office tower construction has been disproportional downtown over the last decade. My hope is for a sleek and thin 40-50 story tower that will buck the trend of the 350' - 400' rectangles that are populating downtown.

I 700+ ft Ritz Carlton with residences. Or a Mandarian Oriental.

An off-brand gas station and convenience store, or drive-through bank.

In that case, I think Austin gets a 900 ft Trump Tower.

I was thinking more in terms of hotel brands, but I would probably cry if this happened.

How about RIU Plaza's second(?) location in the US? I like their Panama City location.

Sofitel?
Shangri La?
Mandarin Oriental?

Not surprised at this if it turns out to be true. Never thought this project would happen.

They're gonna take the exact Taco Cabana at Lamar and Riverside, and move it right to that spot. Then it's going to get a historic building placard because it was such an integral part of the area before the TacoPUD came along and RUINED SOUTH AUSTIN. /s

This hurt me to type, it physically hurt me.

Is there a possibilty someone will just buy the designs as well and just move forward with ZaZa since it has already been approved. Strange that they could lose financing that abruptly.

That is really odd! "Hotel ZaZa Downtown Austin" was a sponsor at several SXSW events this year. However, there is no mention of an Austin project on their website anymore. The developer spent a hell of a lot of money to obtain the current entitlements on this property! I wonder what went wrong.
