If 105 Ave is going to be rebuilt next year anyway, might as well have waited until then and incorporate the bike lane into that project, and use the bike lane budget to expand the 100 Ave bike lane all the way to 116 St. Or does that make too much sense?

The work to make it so now is minimal and needed to be done ASAP to 'complete the grid'. Columbia BLVD is still going to be 3-4yrs off min.

The 105-109 part of 105 ave wasn't bad for cycling before it was in OK shape and drivers were generally not going to fast, if it were all like that it could have waited but the 109-116 part was is horrible shape. It was completely unsuitable for cycling and it really did need to be done.

Come winter time I expect you'll see the (cleared) bike lane acting as a defacto sidewalk through that section too. The bike lane is a much cheaper temporary solution than a sidewalk would be so it makes sense.

How the Least Bike Friendly City in Canada is Becoming a Cyclist’s Dream

Tired of Edmonton's reputation for being Canada's least bike friendly city, Paths for People founders Conrad Nobert and Anna Ho are taking back the streets.

BY OMAR MOUALLEM, READER'S DIGEST CANADA

Great Canadians: Conrad Nobert & Anna Ho of Paths for People

On a frigid March morning, Conrad Nobert locks up his bicycle and crosses 102 Avenue, a multi-lane road in downtown Edmonton. By the summer of 2017, it will begin its transformation into a separated bike route connected to a seven-kilometre-long grid of safe bike tracks.

Until then, Edmonton will have the dubious honour of being Canada’s largest city without a dedicated downtown bike lane. But that’s changing thanks to Paths for People, the organization Nobert, a computer programming teacher, founded with his friend, neighbour and fellow parent Anna Ho, an environmental engineer. Since 2014, the pair has pressured the city to make it safer to be a cyclist or pedestrian in a place Nobert describes as resolutely “car first.”

I expect the biking statistic for downtown residents to increase in the future.

I'd expect biking for non-downtown residents to increase more. There are lots of people in non-downtown areas whose routes are getting much better, meanwhile many downtown commutes are too short for a bike to make sense.

^^maybe, maybe not. If we are actually near 5-7%, that is massive. I live Downtown, but rarely bike because I walk everywhere.

Been out of town for the last week. So, on my walk in today, noticed some large sidewalk stickers on 104th explaining the 4 new commute/bike/car rules. Always easy to say they should have been there a bit earlier but a really good idea. Hopefully on a number of other sidewalks, particularly by the big parking lots.

They have a large communication program that has been strategically rolling out since July and more to come over the next few weeks/months.

This is not related to downtown but I live in the Northeast corner of the city and am really impressed by the new bike paths that now go under the Henday, by Raven Crest and I presume further east as it appears to be part of the Trans Canada Trail. Well Done Edmonton.

^ it would be nice to get a path under the henday at terwillegar drive. the rec center and all those schools by leger transit are basically cut off by foot/bike by the terwillegar henday overpass.

sure you can go to rabbit hill road overpass but at that point you might as well just drive.

there is a dirt path under the river bridge but thats a disaster. if the city paved it and even connected it to the edge of windermere it would be really helpful for accessing that long path that goes under the transmission lines

Cool, did not know about this.

BTW, happy to see input from anywhere in the region, not just DT.

Yup, it's part of River Valley Alliance's 2012-2017 capital plan. I biked there about two weeks ago, and made it past the henday, but they had just paved the path in front of Ravencrest and it was blocked off.

Here is some of the information: https://www.edmonton.ca/projects_pla...nd-trails.aspx
