Construction on LaGuardia’s AirTrain Will Officially Begin Today
Part of a $4B overhaul of the airport

The AirTrain is part of the $4 billion overhaul of LaGuardia Airport that is now getting underway and will lead to the creation of a new terminal that will reduce delays and allow better circulation for passengers and flights connecting through the airport.

Here it goes..

PA broke ground just weeks ago and already news of skyrocketing cost overruns... what a JOKE!! When it's all said and done the New LaGuardia Airport will cost 13-15 billion! Just watch.. my quote above was from March 21st..when WSJ reported cost going up from 4B to 5.3B..

Progress

It seems as though the design of the Delta portions of LGA has been changed a little. Can't wait to see some real construction going on (ie: the demo of Terminal B). And why are the old AA hangers still standing?

Can't tell if Delta cheapened it or kept the same general terminal. They definitely went 'lame' IMHO on the actually gate piers. Was this to squeeze in more gates? Anyone know?

Actually, let me see if I can put this in to context. If you look closely at the design of terminal B you will noticed that they've got a lot of planes wrapped around the gate hub of that futuristic design with the sky walk-over. But for me it appears the those gate areas are going to be close together (from an internal point of view).
But if we look at the Delta design, it seems as though those gate areas are more spacious inside. BTW, the Delta design has two more gate hubs as compared to the first rendering of the Delta design. Look closely: the original design had two gates with the triangle shaped hub leading to ext.'s on either side; subsequently. The new revised design, even-though this design doesn't have the futuristic shape as the others, to accommodate more area within the gate area.
Not sure if that was done to save money, but I think Delta considered the waiting areas and came up with a better solution.

Unrelated question and SIAP, do you know if the LIRR will have trains from Penn to Mets like they do Penn to Jamaica? Will really help me out personally if they will!

JLC Infrastructure is committing to $10 million in equity for that portion of the airport development.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Tuesday that the east side of the new LaGuardia Airport, which will house Delta terminals, has officially started construction.

Terminals C and D will be completely rebuilt and the four new concourses will be connected with a canopy and walkways so passengers can easily access other parts of the airport.

This will be the first major reconstruction of an airport in the country since Denver International Airport was built in 1994. In a visit to Philadelphia in 2014, Vice President Joe Biden compared LaGuardia Airport to a “third world country.”

Soon after, Cuomo announced a $6 billion private-public partnership that would transform the Queens airport, which was opened in 1939, into a “globally renowned airport.”

Construction began in 2016 on the largest public-private partnership in United States history, with LaGuardia Gateway Partners financing two-thirds of the project. Delta Airlines will contribute $3.4 billion to construct its new terminal.

Half of the new gates in Terminal B will be open to passengers by 2018. The main terminal area, which will connect Terminal B and Terminal C for the first time, will be open in 2020 and a second set of gates will open in two phases – one later in 2020 and the last phase in 2021.

“We’re going to build that’s smarter, more efficient, more effective than ever before,” Cuomo said at the press conference.

It simply needs to be a modern, functioning airport, which is what people need, and a far cry from what it is today.

Any new construction photos lately? Can we see it? Haven't they start construction LGA AirTrain?

It looks great. NY really needs this. The airports need to be upgraded because the current first impression for those entering the city is very poor in comparison to NY's competing cities around the globe, especially London. London's main business airports are superior now that hey have been upgraded to modern standards with terminals that are very impressive.

No, it needs a design that highlights NY's role in the world and reflects its Alpha+ status.

Are they ever going to start train services to LGA, JFK and EWR from Manhattan which don't require changing at Jamaica, etc and can run express?

It's so hard to get to NY's airports compared to other cities around the world. I think I tried taking NJ transit to EWR once and the AirTrain to JFK once. Now I refuse to fly to/from EWR and just pay for an Uber to JFK.

New York's place in the world isn't and hasn't been in question. This is but one of 3 major airports in the immediate area. And people will tell you, they care more about functionality and comfort than about any design or perceived place in the world.
