Cost would be a big one. Though I could also see companies complaining about a lack of parking (and potential cost).

That is good news. My father-in-law works for the City of West Jordan; I don't ever remember his title, but he's the liason between contractors and the city on construction projects. I don't know how much more insider information we'd need or want for this, but he might know some stuff.

I'm trying to decide if I like the design for this or not. There are other renderings on the library website slcolibrary.org that show some more angles and views. I think I was hoping for something more traditional that would have fit in with the West Jordan City Hall complex better. And then I was thinnking, "that City Hall is kind of an abomination," so why not do something modern and different?

In any case, as a heavy County Library user, I'm excited for the new HQ, and I'm glad they located it in West Jordan instead of Sandy or Midvale. I'm excited to see this one go up.

Davis County Cipper
By Tom Busselberg
At last! Falcon Hill groundbreaking Oct. 27

Hill AFB The first groundbreaking ceremony for the massive Falcon Hill project is finally scheduled.
It will be Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. on Hill AFB. Guest speakers will reportedly include stalwart base-backers Sen. Orrin Hatch and Rep. Rob Bishop, as well as Gov. Gary Herbert.
A ceremonial ground breaking was first held two years ago, but delays, largely out of local or state control, delayed any actual start until now.
The 125,000 square-foot, four-story Northrop Grumman facility will serve as the anchor or catalyst for what could be the state's largest mixed use project in decades covering more than 550 acres.
"This is extremely exciting," said State Sen. Stuart Adams, who is also chair of the Military Installation Development Authority.
That body of elected officials primarily from Davis and Weber Counties has been working behind the scenes to make Falcon Hill a reality for several years.
"This 550 acres has the potential of bringing 10s of thousands of jobs into Davis County at a time when the economy is struggling. Job creation is just essential." he said.
"We want to build, take care of people who are unemployed and bring personal wealth, but this is also a way to fun education," Adams said. "We've got to have the economy responding to pay for education."
With work starting on the Northrop Grumman facility, the west gate will also be moved eastward. That will pave the way for private development "outside the gate" of defense related facilities housing various contractors and related buildings.
In addition, the plan calls for eventually replacing the old "1200 series" World War II-era buildings where hundreds of people on base work.
"As we privatize that 550 acres (in terms of private tenants), the buildings that will be built will increase the tax base for Davis County," Adams said. "That ground is now tax-exempt. It helps build that tax base, and brings in tons of jobs. It's just a win for everybody."
"This is a big one,"agreed MIDA vice-chair and Sen. Jerry Stevenson. "You look at the whole view along there (base), there's a tremendous potential for Northern Utah.
"In my estimation, this will be the biggest economic development initiative to hit Northern Utah since probably World War II, (BDO) Business Depot Ogden, Freeport Center, and Hill AFB initial construction," he said.
MIDA Executive Director Rick Mayfield praised the efforts of many to reach this point: MIDA board and staff, the Air Force, and developers Sunset Ridge, "who have continually pushed, bent over backwards."
"Because it's such a large project and Enhanced Use Lease projects are basically new to the Air Force (such as this on, reportedly the largest), there have just been a lot of questions that have had to be answered, some at the highest levels of the Air Force," he said.
"Now we're on track. We're moving ahead, and a building will be stared," Mayfield said, adding, "It's a great model for public, private partnership.
"It's going to take some time (for all of it to be finished), but the skyline of Hill AFB (and beyond) will look dramatically different."
No link available because I had to copy this off of my physical newspaper (they really do exist). Also some of the grammar errors you will read in this article are not mine.

Canyons expansion is on schedule for opening day

The Canyons Resort

Patrick Parkinson
Of The Record Staff

An expansion underway at Canyons will make the resort near Park City the third largest ski area in the United States. The project includes a new lift and 300 new acres of skiing in the Iron Mountain area.
Canyons is already the largest ski area in Utah. With the new terrain the resort will rival Vail Resort in Vail, Colo., and California's Heavenly Ski Resort, according to Todd Burnette, the vice president of marketing at Canyons.

"Everything that we're doing here is really designed to try to improve the guest experience," Burnette said in an interview at the resort. "They can now get on the snow much, much quicker."

Before the expansion "there were a lot of qualifiers that came with people describing what they thought of the Canyons," Burnette said.

"We're blessed with some of the best ski areas in the world," he said. "We felt we needed to make these changes in order to compete."

Crews have moved the base of the Flight of The Canyons gondola nearer to the Cabriolet lift, which shortens the walk dramatically, according to Burnette.

"The idea behind that is really to make it much easier for people to get up on the mountain in the morning," Burnette said. "It's a huge deal. It took a long time to get up on the mountain."

Meanwhile, some buildings in the resort village, which blocked access to the base area for skiers on the north side of the mountain, were torn down.

Canyons officials now call that area the "ski beach"

By FamilyMan5K

"Now they can ski right down here into the village," Burnette explained. "It's going to be a huge improvement We're really borrowing a lot of ideas from Europe as far as nice furniture and little food carts."
A new restaurant is expected to open in the resort village during the upcoming winter season. The 4,000-square-foot eatery in the Grand Summit Hotel will be called The Farm.

"There are a couple hundred outdoor seats that will be part of this restaurant," Burnette said.

A new high-speed lift is being built where the base of the gondola had been.

"What you see there are the beginnings of the new lower terminal of the orange bubble lift," Burnette said, gesturing toward the construction site. "It increases the uphill capacity out of the base Now right here at the base area you've got two great options."

The lift chairs will feature heated seats and pull-down enclosures, Burnette said.

After a roughly nine-minute ride the new lift will unload between the Saddleback and Sun Peak areas, he added.

Those who choose to depart at a "mid station" will find "access to all of the old ParkWest ski runs," Burnette said.

"Now you can get to Lookout Peak," Burnette said.

The 300 new acres of skiing in the Iron Mountain area will have "good tree skiing" with runs for intermediates and experts, Burnette said.

Officials are also spending money improving the resort's ability to make snow. A reservoir under construction near where the new lift unloads "almost doubles our snowmaking capacity on the whole mountain," Burnette said.

"We didn't have the ability to make snow all the way down to the bottom early in the season," he said.

Officials began designing these improvements when Talisker Corp. purchased Canyons from the American Skiing Company about two years ago.

"There is so much happening," Burnette said.

He said the bulk of the work will be completed in time for opening day Nov. 26.

"With the exception of the reservoir, all of the rest of this is done by opening day," Burnette said. "The towers are in and the concrete is poured."

Changes underway at Park City Marriott -
New meeting rooms increase capacity, renovations modernize design.

The addition of Waldorf Astoria Park City, St. Regis Deer Crest and Montage has raised the bar for businesses in the lodging industry, so Park City Marriott has raised its own bar, said general manager Paul Christensen...

The West Jordan library has broken ground. Work on the site has gone on for a week. Once there's more to see I'll take some pictures during my morning walks and post them.

It sure does.

Right near where I love at 3300 S and 200 E a new, very nice-looking apartment complex just finished construction too. Not sure if anybody ever mentioned anything about it since I only just started coming here, but it's taking advantage of what should be a good location across from the Century 16. It's too bad the rest of this area just isn't that good (as I said though I live in that area - I can admit it).

And just when driving around the area I'm surprised at how many small projects are happening in South Salt Lake during such bad economic times. SSL is really using the lack of development elsewhere to their advantage to lessen the gap between themselves and other cities.

And honestly, when was the last time anyone saw a new 7-eleven being built?

Well there is one being built on the corner of 27th and State. I know nothing to get excited about, but hey it's new, isn't that something?

The In 'n Out Burger in Centerville is open and packed with people. Also, right across I-15 the site work is going forward for the new Larry H Miller Megaplex Theater and is slated to open October 2011. It will have 14 screens. Eventually there is to be restaurants, retail and housing around it.

There's also a new Sev being build at about 94th south and state as well as one in AF. It's interesting that they aren't be associated with gas stations around here anymore.

Utah facility for Twitter data center up and going

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/5...ility.html.csp

...Twitter allows users to send out 140-character messages to “followers.” Its explosive growth — now transmitting about 1,000 tweets per second — has led to serious service problems. A Twitter engineering blog announced in July that the company was “moving our technical operations infrastructure into a new, custom-built data center in the Salt Lake City area.” ...

That was fast. I don't remember ever seeing a new building going up in that area. I'm guessing they moved into an old building. What building did they move into?

7-11 Just moved into their brand-spanking new 21 story corporate headquarters highrise in downtown Dallas...and opened a flagship store on the main floor. It's absolutely awesome!

(sorry....not trying to rub it in or anything...)

A flagship 7-11 store? Must be pretty...amazing. If the floor's still sticky by the Slurpees, I'd be disappointed.

I'd be disappointing if the floors weren't slurpee sticky. Afterall, a flagship is suppose to accentuate what makes a place unique, only on a much more intense level. So super sticky slurpee floors is what I expect.

A flagship 7-11?? Isn't that kind of like saying a 'high-end Wal-mart'? No offense to 7-11...but they have built a brand name that everyone knows them for, and it isn't exactly actual grocery shopping or a place that you spend more than...oh 5 minutes in, get in buy your 1-2 items that you need right now, get out.

I don't believe it was a new building. They just leased out a data center that a Utah company owns. They may have done some 'remodeling' or 'extending' of it. Still, it supposedly houses a good chunk of Twitter's infrastructure.

And speaking of 7-11, I don't think there's a better deal than 2 chili big bites and a slurpee (about $3.50). In places even like Denver there's 7-11s all over downtown. Just regular gas-station ones IN SLC though.
