Since the work today is so fast and furious, and this part of the foundation will disappear from view - I want to re-post a question I asked several pages ago, but got no response.

I'm curious about the four grillages in the core. It's seems odd these would be used here as I have not seen them used in modern highrise construction. There were usually used to distribute heavy loads in soft soil. Many Chicago skyscrapers were built this way.

I'm wondering what they would support here - I mean it seems redundant to use these ALONG WITH with the other columns using deep tendons embedded in bedrock.

I don't know if I'm making any sense. Perhaps Marcatio could help me out here?
The bedrock 432 Park Avenue is being built on is schist which is different from gneiss. The schist is weaker than the gneiss so it requires a bit more reinforcing.

Thanks for the reply,
So, I assume this is commonly used in this scale project in this area.

This could have easily been plucked out of a Dr. Suess book. For less than the price of a Kindle, or a Nook.

On September 20, 2012, the Link-Belt rough-terrain crane appeared on the site of 432 Park Avenue. Since then, numerous supplies had been unloaded in preparation for the next phase of construction to begin, after the foundation had been completed. On September 24, the inner face forms of the core was erected. On September 25, the beginning of the sub-basement floor began to be formed. First, metal shores were placed, girders placed atop the shores, then stringers laid perpendicular to the girders, then the plywood for the floor deck placed.

Two rebar bending stations were set up along the 56St. wall, with two rebar bending tables and rebar supports. Rebar in quantity has been arriving, and being unloaded. The Link-Belt crane is being kept busy.

The frenetic pace of activity commences, as an army of workers scurry about, quickly forming the sub-basement floor. Openings left in the floor are there, presumably for access for basement mechanical items. Column openings will be made through the plywood sheathing, and column forms and column reinforcing will be placed later.

After reading the entire thread I am now confused about the final design,
Are the big openings in the sides of the facade just for the mechanical floors?
At first I thought they were an open balcony area for the residents.

After I read 30+ pages about the proposed plan and guessing games about its final appearance, I'm really confused!

I'm guessing the render in the top of the thread is the most recent view as to what it will look like?

Both.

Quick check on all sides. Don't get too used to the hole, it'll be covered before we know it. (September 26, 2012)

[QUOTE=NYguy;5845872]Both.

I find the construction sequence confounding. After going through the trouble to block out for columns and the core wall, they then deck right over the top of them?? (The cols, at least.) Did they miss a rebar delivery?!?!?

This may be the fastest built skyscraper in the US since the ESB.

I'll reserve my judgement until I see it rise in the air. I can not believe that the little square box will nearly 1400 foot tall.
