I really don't see the need for this one. The original is indicative of a specific style, and not a bad example at that. I don't see the re-clad bringing anything architecturally significant to it. It's like the re-clad of the Verizon building across from Bryant Park in NY.

You are speaking from an aesthetic point of view only. Their reasons could be much more complex. Moisture penetration, failing sealing, thermal loss efficiency perhaps?

nope, it got approved. The developer then sold, and the new owner has tweaked the design to their preferences while retaining the original zoning.
