I love seeing Ottawa brands doing well... We can add Beavertails to this and I wouldn't be surprised to see Bridgehead expand across Canada in the coming years.

There are store right across Nova Scotia, and have been for some time. I think they are in PEI as well.

This is good news though, originally I had no idea (me not being from here) that GT was an Ottawa based company.

I guess someone has to replace all the Peoples, SAAN, Biway, Met and Bargain Shops across the country ;-)

I actually went to Shawarma Palace for the first time today. It was packed. Seems to be a popular place.

Wow, what a blast from the past! I remember that store vividly.

As for Biway, wasn't there one under the old parking garage at Rideau Centre where Fabricland was?

I wonder if that is a prelude to another demolition.
That place (on St. Laurent Blvd @ Donald St) has been dismal for years, since Zellers is gone.
Years of construction for a Target which closed almost the same day it opened. And years of nothing since.

I would agree with that. It was always the perfect place to stop if you didn't want to wait in line. It was also weird that the same company had a "full service" supermarket next to a discount supermarket.

Sears has put itself up for sale. My guess is it gets sold for scrap.

That Zellers was itself dismal, as I recall. I used to pop in from time to time and was always struck by how depressing the place looked and felt. I doubt it will happen, but it would be nice to see a more urban development on that site.

The times they are a changing. As I recall they own some prime real estate.

Last year I got on a mailing list - and to help pass the time I complete the occasional anonymous opinion surveys. About two weeks ago I received one regarding Sears. My sense was that they were exploring options to survive in Canada. As much as I tried I just couldn't see a viable way forward for them.

They have not yet put themselves up for sale. They're exploring their options.

Either way, they're in trouble.

Bunch of stores closing. It would seem the St Laurent and Carlingwood locations are staying but the Home store in the east end and Hull location are closing.

Carlingwood is actually one of the highest performing stores in Ontario.

Bit surprised how many Home stores they are closing (15 of 23 according to this article: http://www.ottawacitizen.com/busines...545/story.html)

With Kenmore being one of their last significant brand assets I figured this was one of their areas of strength.
