Pertinent news story:

http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/canada-...1966-1.2127101

Police-reported homicides hit a historic low last year, as Canada’s murder rate fell by eight per cent to its lowest level since 1966.

The sharp drop in the country’s murder rate was largely due to 40 fewer murders committed in Quebec last year, according to Statistics Canada. That province’s murder rate in 2013 was at its lowest since reporting began in 1961.

The StatsCan data shows gang, domestic, and firearm-related homicides were down in 2013, while the number of fatal stabbings actually rose compared with the previous year.

The national homicide rate fell to 1.44 murders per 100,000 people in 2013, down from 1.56 the year before. There were 505 murders reported last year, 38 fewer than in 2012.

There was a mob hit today in Anjou. Montreal has 24 now. On pace for another record low after last years 28.

A triple homicide in an East York hi-rise has brought Toronto's YTD total to 53.

Interesting tidbit from the Stats Can site: the homicide rate outside of CMAs is slightly higher than that of CMAs across the country.

Not a homicide but an attempted shooting in Vancouver

This is for homicides, not for whatever an "attempted shooting" is.

Less than 30 homocides in a metropolis of 4,000,000 +. I keep telling that to my South American friends and they will hear none of it. It just can't be, I must be making it up.

And not a boring city either - a city known for its rambunctious night life. Toronto is impressive as well given how fast it is growing.

About that, does anyone know where I can get reliable data on CMA homicide counts?

It hasn't been a terrible year for the numbers in Winnipeg overall. Some high profile cases though.

It has been a bad year for downtown. 5 homicides, with a couple others near downtown. Usually there's only one or two in that area with the north and west ends having the vast majority.

http://www5.statcan.gc.ca/cansim/a03...253-0008&p2=31

Select Table 253-0004 for CMA Data
Select Use Add/Remove Data tab to customized the table.

You can also download the data.
I recommend using the Beyond 20/20 Version (You will need to download a data browser)
- Select the download tab
- Go to Option 2 - and select Beyond 20/20
- Download entire table
- select "Download file from CANSIM (IVT Version)"

To view Beyond 20/20 (IVT files) you will need to install the Beyond 20/20 Browser.
Follow the instructions to install the software.

Beyond 20/20 allows you easier manipulate data files using numerous dimensions. (i.e. CMA, Year & Number/Rate)

I'd be surprised if there were 10 murders in the Montreal region outside of the island. Anyone has numbers?

Yes the Montreal numbers I believe are only for the city plus island.... so 2 million people roughly right? For that number having only 24 murders is amazing!! Especially given that Montreal isn't some boring city, given it's lively environment and clubbing, etc it's even more impressive.

It also has some of the poorest residents in the country. Same for most big cities.
