This is kinda how I feel as well.

On one hand, it's great to see that this site is finally getting something because something is better than nothing. It's also a good sign to see that Chicago is still able to construct something given market conditions.

But on the other hand, this does feel like wasted potential. It would definitely be awesome to see Chicago get a megatall and this site is a good location for one given the impact on the skyline. Plus having the foundation from the Spire would I assume help with the costs. It's definitely disappointing to see Chicago falling behind other cities with its tallest building not even being in the top 20 anymore. Chicago is also no longer in the top 10 for cities with most skyscrapers.

Oh well, maybe Chicago will get a megatall someday and make a comeback. Hopefully in my lifetime!

I'm still happy to see that at least something is getting built and that the 800+ft. streak will continue!

I for one do not think sites directly on the lakefront are ideal for even supertalls, let alone megatalls. They detract from rather than add to the depth of the skyline. I'd prefer having shorter buildings on the lake, and then taller and taller behind that for a more layered depth.

Don't get me wrong, I hope Chicago gets a megatall in my lifetime, just remembering how much buzz there was around the Spire from people all across the planet was a sight to behold. It was wonderful how it brought Chicago to the forefront of discussion of architecture and structural engineering, but regardless of design, I always thought a building of that size would have been better off quite a bit further inland. I'd much rather see a good design of this scale here. The original render from Related with the terra cotta, with these two currently planned heights would have been perfect for me.

Please stay on topic.

This thread is not about potential megatalls or global skyscraper rankings or whatever.

The next post in this thread better be someone reporting that a caisson drill rig has been delivered to the site.

I have a question if any one can answer it.On days the hole doesn’t have any water but in the last picture above it’s filled up. Is this water from the river? Cause I can’t accept that this is the water from that drizzle we had the other day.

That picture is taken across from (or on) the river- it's not of the hole.

They did put Secant pile walls all around the property so river leaking should be very minimal to none.

Developer gets $500 million in construction financing for project on Chicago Spire site

Related Midwest has secured more than $500 million in construction financing as it starts work on the first phase of its massive two-tower development on the Chicago Spire site, a major step forward in a development that will significantly alter the city’s lakefront skyline.
....

He also expressed confidence in the downtown apartment market and and said more young, highly-educated people are moving to downtown Chicago than to any other downtown in the country.

"We are seeing that in our buildings, we're seeing it across the spectrum of apartments being built in downtown Chicago, so we think that the broader market, the country, will get this message at some point and you'll probably see a lot more building, but at this point there's not a lot of recognition about that and we think it's a great time to be delivering a building in the city of Chicago," he said.

Why would it not happen? It's not really that ambitious of a project.

I hope this can expedite Parcel I and company somehow.

Sorry, I don't have access to the article. Is that $500 million in funding enough for both towers or is it only for this first phase including the underground garage, dusable park, and first tower?

Terra cotta would have been cool but the facade on this still looks awesome. It should be a beautiful tower.
