Wandered by the site today. Horticulture building (most of it - it is split into a large and small section) has moved a significant amount. Not sure if it is in its final location but it is interesting to see the two pieces separated. Worth a visit if you have a chance. Also, there are components of a tower crane on the field and a few trailers set up to the south. I was surprised to see the crane components today. Sorry, no pictures.

The yet-to-be-named team will play its first season in 2013-14 at Scotiabank Place before hopefully moving to the Civic Centre once the renovations to Lansdowne Park are complete, according to a spokesperson for the franchise owners, who provided information to OBJ on background.

The team will be owned by Bytown Sports and Entertainment. The organization is comprised of Denis Sabourin, the owner of Xactly Design & Advertising and co-owner of Bytown Media, as well as Gus Takkale, a motivational speaker and author who is president of GTI Canada.

The spokesperson said running a NBL Canada franchises will cost in the magnitude of $2 million annually. The team has not yet secured any corporate sponsors, but will be approaching companies as the team takes shape.

The team will play 20 home games at Scotiabank Place. While individual ticket pricing is not yet finalized, season tickets are expected to cost between $350 and $450 for lower bowl seats and up to $1,300 and $1,500 for premium courtside seats.

More details are expected to be released at a press conference scheduled for Nov. 21.

The league is entering its second season and currently has eight teams in central and eastern Canada: Windsor, London, Oshawa, Montreal, Halifax, Summerside, Moncton and Saint John.

The Bytown spokesperson said the league averages between 3,000 and 3,500 spectators a game.

When the team takes to the court, they will be entering an increasingly crowded Ottawa sports market.

Well thats random. So now we are about to see what, 4 new sports team? Thats Ottawa for you, when we need somthing, it will take a while to get, and once it gets here, it's a massive flood of the same.

Not all sports are the same, and not everyone who likes a sport likes all sports. There are people who really like basketball specifically for whom this is terrific news.

Oh, yeah. No doubt a lot of people will like basketball. I personally prefer basketball compared to football or soccer. But there will still be some people do like multiple sports; right now, we only have 2 hockey teams in winter, but now we will be adding a basketball team to the market, which isn’t too bad, it will probably work (especially if they have the realistic expectation of 3500 fans per game).

But summer might be saturated a bit; with baseball and football having a rocky history in Ottawa, and the addition of a soccer team, it might be a bit tough to support 3 summer teams. But I might, and hope that I am wrong.

Baseball is the only one that concerns me a bit. I don't know of any attachment to it here, but that may just be ignorance on my part.

The FIFA events should give soccer a boost, as well as having the MLS dangled in front of them a few years ago. I hope that folks don't avoid the NASL because it's considered inferior. During the soccer/football debate, there were comments to the effect that the NASL wasn't good enough for this city.

Basketball is a huge unknown. I think the university programs draw well. Don't know if that's enough to satisfy the craving for those fans.

An NBL Canada team playing at Scotiabank Place? That building is gonna feel empty, but I guess they have no other choice since the civic centre is closed. If they were playing in the civic centre right away I could see Ottawa being one of the more successful markets right off the bat like the Fat Cats were in the IBL. But I'm not sure people will want to travel to Kanata to watch games. Nevertheless, I'll probably buy a jersey and go to a few games.

Great pics and even better captions! I appreciated the little historical tour of Lansdowne. This is gonna be a really exciting contruction site for the next few years.

The Friel Building (beige structure with red roof in photo above) will be demolished in the next couple of week or so.

Most of the construction trailers are to begin moving into the Cattle Castle... yes I still call it the Cattle Castle.

The last of the City staff moved out of the Lansdowne admin office this week. Now who will empty the rat traps.
