No, it is unlikely it will ever run this year as all of the docks are still submerged. The same company is running boat tours out of the Forks though.

We're talking about a net loss .08% of the population of Manitoba to Saskatchewan. Which I think is expected with the booming oil and gas industry.
Surpised me that it was that high. Ontario having the highest migration to Sask didn't surprise me, but I wouldn't have expected Manitoba to be # 2. Not that I really gave it much thought, but I believed Manitoba's economy to be a little more robust, though not booming, compared to most of the country east of there.

Much like with AB, I suspect there have been a good number of native SKers heading home in the past few years.

Also perhaps because it's an easy move. The two province look very similar, the people are quite similar and it's an easy drive back and forth.

Most people making the move are folks in the trades. Saskatchewan has way more opportunities than Manitoba. Otherwise, Manitoba is doing just fine in terms of jobs.

Will fast-growing Saskatchewan overtake Manitoba?
Manitoba has more people, but Saskatchewan is catching up, StatsCan says.

^ I agree about the commentors. They seem just as confused as Manitoba voters. I just don't see Pallister being the hero everyone makes him out to be. Give him a shot I guess. But once a crook....

That's unfortunate. But thank you for the info.

It's very difficult to predict the future - obviously. That said, I would not be particularly surprised to see Saskatchewan surpass Manitoba. I kind of expect it. Manitoba is in many ways "committed" to not pushing a resource economy in the way our Saskatchewan brethren are. I believe somebody on here mentioned a short while back that the baseline geologic survey that Manitoba still relies upon is from the 1980's, and that it would be considered at best to be perhaps questionable, or questionable in certain areas. If I understood things correctly, it all distills down to Manitoba not really knowing exactly what is under the ground all over Manitoba. If that trend continues, Manitoba just won't touch Saskatchewan on the resource front.

In the near term, what is there that could fuel dyanmic growth in Manitoba, a location that has a taxation system that is not as competitive as our neighbours to the left?

I love this province, and I am not trying to be negative, but I look at what oil and gas has done for Alberta, and if Saskatchewan can realize even a fraction of that sustained over time (plus potash and uranium), Manitoba really does not have an answer. Certainly not an answer that can employ the raw numbers that the resource sector can.

I keep hearing that Saskatchewan has more oil sands than Alberta so you haven't seen anything yet. Plus the Bakken formation in the south is ginormous. Unless people stop needing energy and food, Saskatchewan's economy is not going to slow down anytime soon.

Would be nice to see how much Manitoba develops it's (albeit small) portion of the Bakken formation.

The Bakken field play, these stats are not current over 1 year, was producing aprx; 12,000 bbl/d in Canada, 4K/d in Sask. 8K/d in Man. from over 500+ wells as per Canadian Discovery based out of Calgary.

It's the green part. But this image is from the University of Alberta, so it's probably biased.

Actually the map and source you provided are from a very reputable site.

The image you provided from the UofA blog originates from information compiled by The Canadian Centre for Energy Information.

Don't you find it interesting that the discovered oil sands stop at the Alberta/Saskatchewan border? I don't have a source for my theory but one could even use this map as evidence that the oil sands could exists well into the west-central part of Saskatchewan.

Profitable potash virtually stops at the Manitoba/Saskatchewan border, apparently. So why couldn't oil be the same at the Ab/Sk border?

The oil sands COULD extend well into Saskatchewan. Jesus COULD rise one day for the second coming. You just never know.
