Not sure how long this page will be up for, but here's a link to pdf's for the site plans and a school board presentation for the proposed 600,000+ sf shopping center on 322 near mushroom hill rd. The center is proposed by the same company that built the plaza with wegmans on the west shore.

Looks good if it was built as proposed. Espically if it adds some additional lanes. But I agree it would take a long time to get approved. Do we really need most of those stories listed? I guess they don't have them in that area.

Wow, more horrible, ugly, boring, asphalt-ridden sprawl! And I bet you it is to be filled w/ stores you can find right down the road at another crappy strip mall! The HBG metro is really coming along and getting w/ the times LOL

Harrisburg area, do me a favor and look at MD, DC, etc., and get a clue as to what Lifestyle Centers are. Not perfect by any means, but it sure beats this monotonous crap!

Wait, so they're planning on chopping out a huge chunk of Chambers Hill for this? ......... I'm honestly at a loss for words on this one. I mean, I can't really say "good idea"... it seems amazingly awful, to say the least.

I guess I am looking solely at the numbers. If they have the evidence to back up their claims it would be a great source of income. Especially if it can help with updating of roads. I don't think they have to chop out the hill. I think that was one of the reasons for the 4 extra lanes.

In the Patriot-News real estate section today:
Bartlett, Traynor & London LLC has purchased the 40,000-square-foot former Police Athletic League building at 1110 N. Third St. in Harrisburg

The building is to become the future home of the Harrisburg Mid-Town Arts Center and the Susquehanna Lofts town homes. Renovations are to be completed during 2008.

The Bill Gladstone Group of NAI/CIR and lawyer Stu Magdule of Smigel Anderson & Sachs represented the property owner, Harrisburg Redevelopment Authority.

Its only on floor 13 - I don't get it. I just don't get it.

according to Harrisburg.......

NEW HARRISBURG UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC CENTER REACHEST HIGEST STRUCTURAL POINT

Mayor Stephen R. Reed and officials from the Harrisburg University of Science and Technology today conducted a topping-off ceremony for the University’s new Academic Center being built at the corner of 4th and Market Streets, with construction on the building now having reached its highest structural point. Mayor Reed and others signed the last structural beam that will be placed at the top of the building.

Reed said the new Academic Center is a 16-story, 371,000 square foot tower that stands 194 feet in height. The $73 million building includes 24 classrooms, six scientific teaching labs, six seminar rooms, 12 student team meeting areas, a 125-seat auditorium, and space for 1,600 students. A courtyard will also be included at the base of the Academic Center.

Mayor Reed said the state-of-the-art facility will also include a 20,000 volume library, wireless internet access capabilities, video-conferencing capabilities, and a multimedia production facility.

The building was designed by Burt, Hill Architects of Butler, PA. The Construction Manager for the project is Reynolds Construction Management, Inc., of Harrisburg. Materials for the project include 10,000 cubic yards of concrete, 260,000 pounds of rebar (steel reinforcement bars), 6 million pounds of structural steel, and 350,000 square feet of metal decking.

“Today’s topping-off ceremony is an important day for the Harrisburg University of Science and Technology and for this City,” said Mayor Reed. “The completion of this building next year will very significantly advance the University’s and the City’s priority goal of having a workforce that is educated in science, technology, engineering and math, a workforce that is greatly-needed in both Harrisburg and throughout the United States.”

The Academic Center is scheduled to open in late-2008.

How could they not chop at least some of Chambers Hill out? I'm quite familiar with the area (my mom lives in Chambers Hill, actually) so I'm guessing that they would cut out a section of the hill and put up a retaining wall. I guess the outcome depends on what exactly goes in there, but I just keep thinking how strange and out of place it will feel.

About the chambers hill development, if I recall when the project was first announced, they were hoping to have tenants in place by 2010, so I wouldn't be surprised to see more action soon on it. (Google "Swatara marketplace" for PN article, or look back through thread).

Also other news from the central penn business journal...

NEW: New office building to go up on Harrisburg riverfront

An acre has been cleared for the construction of a $6 million office building at 3003 N. Front St. in Harrisburg.
Hampden Township-based Developers III plans to break ground on the three-story brick building within the next few weeks, said Anthony Pascotti, a partner with the development company. The 40,000-square-foot facility will take about a year to build, Pascotti said.

The ground level will be a parking lot, which sits below two stories of raised class-A office space, said D. Michael Frye, president of Harrisburg-based Murray Associates Architects, the firm which designed the building. The parking lot will accommodate 50 cars, Frye said, but the firm is studying ways to expand parking. The building will rise about 42 feet, he said.

Although the architects were not overly concerned about the building flooding, the raised structure safeguards it from flooding since it will sit so close to the Susquehanna River, he said.

Continuous window space will cover all four sides of the building to take advantage of the river views, Frye said. The riverfront space makes the property a rare find, Pascotti said.

“It has a great view. It’s a great piece of dirt,” he said.

One tenant will occupy the building, but Pascotti did not say who that would be.

Before Developers III bought the property, an old brick house sat vacant on the lot for years, Pascotti said. It was last used as office space, he said. The development group recently leveled the house, which was dilapidated and filled with vermin, Pascotti said.

The Quandel Group Inc., based in Lower Paxton Township, will construct the new building.

Right near the Dixon University Center. Interesting. Still the city of Hbg there, I believe.

I wondered what they were doing with that site. Glad to know it is immediately being developed. Seems to be moving pretty fast it was only sold a couple weeks ago.

I agree and it seems extremely pointless, a HUGE waste of time and a HUGE waste of money. If it was going to be for something cool than maybe I would feel better about it, but just another crappy strip mall (that will probably house another Target, Ruby Tuesdays and/or "state of the art" movie theatre LOL)?!?

^LOL, I couldn't imagine that they would put ANOTHER Target in... you do realize how close that other one is, don't you? LOL. But seriously, I can't imagine what they're going to put in, so I guess I'll have to wait and amuse myself. But on the other hand, Harrisburg development succeeds in destroying more trees...

Think Wegmans. And it will immediately draw thousands of folks from the east (Hershey/Hummelstown).

There won't be another Wegmans in the Harrisburg area for a while. I have that on good word.
