Does anyone know what the building was before the parking lot? This is all I can really find and it shows just the side of a large building.

I don't know, One Meridian Plaza's address was 1414 South Penn Sq. This is 1414 Chestnut Street. I don't think One Meridian was that wide. I think it looks like two separate buildings in the picture I posted from the 70s'.

It was the Morris Building (1910-2001) 18 flrs, 250ft.

Nice. Thanks. Any idea of why it was demolished? it really is ashame anytime we lose any large building considering we don't have that many of them.

This building was also really wild. Just reading that was the west end trust building built by frank furness. Terrible it only stood for a short period of time.

It was torn down in advance of a development that never happened. Condo project I believe.

Yes, a beautiful building. I almost recall seeing this building or some highrise of this stature being demolished to make way for, what was then called "Fidelity Mutual Life Building" sold to Girard Bank I believe then became Meridan. In the early 70's, in the Bulletin Newspaper at that time , had a cover photo, and a full story about the (Meridan) having a twin! It looked like it would complete that southern side, that was very concrete and boring. The proposed "twin" showed the mirror image that was on the North to be built on the South angle with the"windows" side. It also showed a "heliport", but this, of course, never happened.
Another image that I found online was a proposed highrise where the W is being built now, AND the Meridan site, that would have been taller than City Hall. Not the 1000 footer, which came in the mid 2000's but one from the lates 60's I believe. Pictured below:

Are you sure about that? I thought I had once read that it had to be demolished due to damage incurred from the fire next door at 1 Meridien.

perhaps, but either way it was going to come down because the original plan was for one building that would've occupied the W and RARC site but a battle between developers led to the split sites and two towers.

15th and Chestnut 1991: The charred Meridian high rise looms in the background. It wouldn't be demolished for another 8 years.
But, in the foreground on the right there's the W construction site before the old B. Dalton Books and Fidelity bank building were torn down and replaced by that surface parking lot we all loved so much.
The W can't be finished soon enough!

The W is already looking good, and it's only a four-story exposed concrete structure at the moment! I can't wait to see how 15th and Chestnut will look when this beautiful building is complete!

Anyone know what the cantilevered deck is on the third floor (Chestnut side) is?

I don't see it in the renderings.
