Also, what does Toronto mean? Do those stats include Mississauga and other burbs?
And all the crane data from every city is likely to be hobby / volunteer based with varying levels of accuracy and definitions for the city in question.
So in the end it is just a fun imperfect gauge.
For example, many of the graphics shown didn’t even include Vancouver at all but showed Calgary and Seattle.
So take it for what it is.

Hi there, one of UrbanToronto's admins chiming in here!
I run the crane count for the our area on UT, and I have those same questions regarding the RLB list. They never state what constitutes Toronto, or Calgary for that matter (like, is Airdire counted for example, or is that too far north of Calgary?) while with so many satellite cities/burbs around Toronto, I have no idea which ones they add in to their counts and which they omit. I think they add
some in as their count is always slightly higher than ours, but not actually higher enough to capture all the cranes in just Mississauga for example, which is likely the most obvious one to include if you're adding just one municipality. Right now we count 346 cranes in the part of the GTA that we track, with 217 of those in the City of Toronto proper. We have no way of be sure that the count is absolutely up-to-date on all cranes of course, but I'm willing to bet that we are within 10 of being correct at any given time... (out of 346, I'm confident we are not too far off the actual "God only knows" number). Anyway, if you want to see how we track it, the thread is here:
https://urbantoronto.ca/forum/threads/cranes-in-the-gta-first-3-posts-regularly-updated.32227/
Anyway, I'll end by saying that the reason I popped in this evening was that I was just talking cranes with a colleague here and the RLB thing came up, I told him it was a scam, went looking for proof, and was really glad to find this thread. We may just do an article in the coming weeks about how incomplete the RLB Index is, but not until we've had time to do a lot more research. Anyway, thanks for starting the research off with a bang Vancouver crane-ites! Cheers!
