Heil Barnett! Heil Barnett!

Isn't "heil" a nazi salute? Yeah, not sure Barnett would appreciate that one. Hahaha.

Plus he develops mediocre architecture.

Might be mediocre compared to some other projects, but we have to give him credit, he gets stuff done.

Same here. We need actual designs and not mass models.

While I can understand the fact that developers technically don't have to release renderings right away, it would be appreciated it. Stern knowns how to show off. He just builds a high rise that is a rendering.

Key point of the article:

Quote:
The building was first reported to be 68 stories, then 71 stories, then 56 stories, and now the latest filing with the Department of Buildings has a revised height pinned again at 68 stories, or 800 feet at its highest floor.

I must say, I'm a little apprehensive about how much of a sore thumb this tower will be in this location. I've never liked towers that stand alone, especially when they're a) bland and b) dwarfing the Manhattan bridge.

It likely won't be alone for long. There's a huge warehouse to the south that is for sale and eventually going to be redeveloped with highrises.

And there are other potential tower sites in the neighborhood.

You Told Us: Is This Building Too Tall for the LES Waterfront?

Quote:
A plan to build an 800-foot high rise on the East River waterfront has gotten some readers down.

Extell Development Company, which is developing a luxury tower at 250 South St., recently filed an amendment to raise the building’s height to 68 stories from 56 stories, making it nearly three times taller than the neighboring Manhattan Bridge and triple the height of the tallest buildings in the neighborhood.

Some readers blasted the plan out of concern that it would change the character of the neighborhood.

“Who's responsible for allowing this monstrosity to be built?! Who can we tar & feather?! Honestly, they are destroying the city for native NYers.”

— Neighborhood Square user DownontheLowerEastSide

"No ... no ... no ... I love tall buildings but not where they don't belong and they definitely don't belong there. I love visiting the lower east side and that's because of its existing character. Whatever is built there should fit the genius (in the old Roman sense), the spirit and tradition, of the place."

— Neighborhood Square user ehadzipetros

“The whole thing is a travesty. It's the same old story, out with the old and in with the new. Soon the LES will only be for the rich like the rest of the city. Disgusting!”

— Neighborhood Square user suesue

Others used sarcasm to get their point across:

“Don't worry, it's just a matter of time before they build some more tall uninspired buildings around it to balance it out. You won't even notice it!”

— Neighborhood Square user phlavery

“It should be 168 stories and unaffordable like everything else in NYC with constant pounding construction and folk being unable to walk. Set your sights and your buildings high, why don't you?”

— Facebook user on DNAinfo's Lower East Side Page

A few readers were less concerned with aesthetics and called for better planning:

"NYC has to grow and change, but it needs to be a more controlled change so that infrastructure changes can keep pace with the expansion. I'm talking about everything from water, sewer, and electricity to seats at the local Starbucks! The current pattern of invading a neighborhood with an isolated, out-of-scale project is not good for the existing residents, the future residents, or the City as a whole."

Oh really?

This tower actually improves the neighborhood from being boring to exciting!

You know how I feel about skyscrapers...

...build 'em as tall as you want!!
The taller, the better!!

The sky's the limit and we're just getting started!!
Let's go!!

Extell’s 80-Story Tower ‘One Manhattan Square’ is Still Causing Cherry Street to Sink

July 21st, 2015

Quote:
It’s common knowledge that the Extell Development Company will forever taint the Lower East Side skyline, and further gentrify the predominantly low-income waterfront. As previously reported, the so-called “One Manhattan Square” planned for 250 South Street is presumed to rise some eighty stories – according to public zoning records – nearly three times the height of the Manhattan Bridge. That’s a lot of shadows.

Notwithstanding the ego-stroking of bossman Gary Barnett, there are still real problems with the land on which this development is rooted. Particularly, the ever-sinking roadway of Cherry Street on the northern perimeter of the project site. It’s sagging two to three inches by some estimates, due to the constant pump-out of ground water.

We first exposed the problem last month, prompting lightning response to patch the gaps and install shoring braces to keep the street from falling into the ditch. The Department of Buildings also issued a stop-work order that was quickly rescinded.

If the Department of Buildings issued a stop-work order, why or how was it rescinded?

Doesn't the street condition become a safety issue?

Idiot articles complainimg about shadows from skyscrapers in Manhattan still? Seriously those retards need to move to Staten Island or some hellish boring suburb in Las Vegas far away from shadows of skyscrapers or trees or anything.

In New York City . . a skyscraper or two should punctuate most every neighborhood.
Especially a boondocks neighborhood like South Cheery Street . . .
But certain neighborhoods require much better design and quality . . .
wouldn't want a tall cheap trashy box to go up on a leafy Greenwich Village side-street .
Perhaps if it had a ton or character . . charm and fancy materials . . well then . .

This Big Spooky town needs every bit of momentous architecture . .
that it can squeeze out of those greedy developers . .
God bless them one and all.

An 800 footer towering over the east river, especially in that location, will be seen from everywhere.
