greatest nightlife in vancouver: pub 340.

$11 pitchers of decent stuff, $3.50 poutine, $6 spicy chicken pasta, and plenty of sketchy old timers with interesting life stories.

I really have to go there more often. Only been once... I love the bars/pubs in the DTES with the sketchy old-timers!

so is that new bar where A&B Sound used to be - first of why couldn't they name it something people can remember other than that new bar where A&B Sound used to be... I have no clue of the name honest - anyway is it like mostly gay?

they have tons of gay events there it seems - which is great but is it a mixed affair like luv affair used to be in the 80's?

It's some number-named club, 560 or something like that?

Anyway, that's the place with the dance floor among the public washrooms. Which I still find quite odd. Maybe someone here has some experience they could share.

Some photos from Cinema's opening night. It looks like it will be a nice addition to the Granville strip: http://www.flickr.com/photos/scottloudoun/sets/72157624020121787/

^It is probably a reference to Granville Street's historic role as a big movie theatre strip (think back to old photos with all the big vertical neon signs of the cinemas lining the street in its heyday).

Vibrant venues for city's party people

The pick of Vancouver's hot spots

By Lina Toyoda, The Province June 29, 2010

Vancouver's nightlife is spread all over the city, with a good variety of shows and events for those in the know. Here's a sample of where you might run into the usual suspects on a night out on the town.

FORTUNE SOUND CLUB

The best sound system in Vancouver. Located in Chinatown at 147 E. Pender St. (between Columbia and Main), the nightclub features an installation by street artist Shepard Fairey and an eco-conscious design. But really, it's the state-of-the-art sound system and the music that brings DJs and scenesters back for more.

REPUBLIC

A popular, two-floor, London-style nightclub in the Granville Street entertainment strip. The main level has a dance floor with DJs and live music while the plush lounge upstairs offers table service. A live reggae band plays every Sunday including ska and classic tunes by The Clash, The Police and Bob Marley.

BILTMORE CABARET

The Biltmore, at Prince Edward Street and East 12th Avenue, can be hipster trendy but the space still feels comfortable with its wooden interior, odd knickknacks and laid-back atmosphere. One of the best live-music venues in town, the Biltmore leans toward the indie and folk-rock scene and serves up ice-cold cans of PBR. Go to www.biltmorecabaret.com for show schedules.

LIBRA ROOM

This eclectic and charming martini lounge on Commercial Drive is a cozy spot for dining and drinks on any night. Open from 5 p.m., the dinner menu is Italian and West Coast fusion, with a late-night pub-fare menu. Live music sets the mood every night with two sets at 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. by burgeoning musicians to local jazz greats.

LAMPLIGHTER

i went there tonight - well sunday - it was amazing such a cool club - giant video that curves around the wall - loads of space but extremely dark you can't see anything when you walk in literally dark crazy - but you get used to it

the washroom is incredible - its the whole basement! its got like a DJ booth and some loungey seating one one side - sinks on the other side with toilets inside little closed of rooms - and soemthing else that i didn't look at - i think it was the urinals that are down a little hallway next to the toilets - the coast check is also down there - the front stairway to the basment is so dark though they don't have any lights at all - ridiculous

everyone i knew who had never been LOVED the washrooms

the hand dryers are amazing they dry your hands so well

anyway its a cool space sort of reminds of luvaffair and graceland combined

Whew, looks like those craving a tiki fix are still in luck:

Vancouver’s iconic Waldorf lounge will remain Polynesian

The architect in charge of renovations to the 63-year-old Waldorf Hotel on East Hastings Street says the iconic tiki lounge housed in the basement will remain true to its original Polynesian theme.

“What most people don’t understand is that except for the lounge, the hotel doesn’t have much tiki,” said Scott Cohen. “We plan to keep all of the tiki elements in the lounge and about 70 per cent of the renovations will be tiki style.”

Cohen is working with restaurateur Ernesto Gomez and musician Thomas Anselmi, who recently took over management of the Waldorf. In the 1980s, Anselmi belonged to the Vancouver punk band Slow and later the alternative-rock band Copyright.

Cohen is an award-winning architect responsible for the design of several popular Vancouver restaurants, including Gastropod and Les Faux Bourgeoisie, while Gomez is co-owner of Nuba restaurants. Also coming on board is Neil Bell, chef at Cabana in Kelowna, and until recently a host on the Food Network program Cook Like a Chef.

Cohen said plans for the hotel, which is scheduled to re-open in October, include an affordable café where the pub was located, as well as a slightly higher-priced European-inspired restaurant....

Ugh, why are people buying into Funktion One's marketing? The Commodore's L'Acoustics rig could kick its ass any day.

From the article:
Quote:
"The Hollywood [has a future] because he owns the property," says Schein.

"But at a certain point the landlords of the Park and the Ridge and Vancouver East will redevelop that property for condos and retail, and they won't be there any more.

"The Stanley became a live theatre, the same as the Vogue, which is no longer a movie theatre. The Orpheum is no longer a movie theatre, the Capitol is now condominiums. You could go on and on."
I live a couple blocks from the Park and it's an integral part of that neighbourhood. Yes, it's inevitable that some day the landlord will want to tear it down and build condos on top of retail. In my dream development, the neighbourhood, city and Schein would petition the landlord to include a 3-screen cinema in the redevelopment - it would keep the neighbourhood as a local hub, allow space for other draw retail (maybe some of the existing stores could come back bigger and better), and maybe the city would give the developer extra density in exchange?

That is a shame, I'm not to surprised if it's true though as outside long weekends there was never a line to get in nor were there many people inside.
