Seriously though, I'm excited to see your beautiful city. I just graduated with a degree in planning and want to see "planning in action" in Portland. Maybe I'll learn a few things, bring 'em back here to LA, and spread the word...

Definitely go to the Portland City Grill early. I tried to go there with the wife after dinner when we were visiting, and the place was packed. We could have sat at the bar, but then you can't really enjoy the view. We ended up heading right back down.

So go early.

Well, Portland was fantastic! It lived up to everything I thought it'd be. Good food, nice people, great city, and fantastic beer!

The bar area, and not the dining room area, has the better view though. But yes, try to get a table along the south facing window looking down the river and over downtown. Don't go into the main dining room area, the views aren't as good.

Guess I'm a little late on that comment seeing as how your visit is over!

I made reservations for "window seating" when I went. Although they don't guarantee your spot, they will try to accommodate you over someone who simply "walks in".

Hi All,

I'm thinking of taking my Japanese in-laws out to Oregon. I haven't been to Oregon since I was a kid, but I'm looking for places to take them. I know of Cannon beach and the Oregon coast is really nice, but has anyone got any recommendations as to specific locations to take them? There's so much beach, everthing from the Tillamook area to Seaside.

The Father-in-law loves nature, and I've shown them all around BC when they've come.

I'm looking for something that's hybrid camping... or somewhat secluded.

Cabins at a reasonable price. Or yerts looked interesting, but the one place I tried was booked. Any suggestions? This is for August.

I'd love any recommendations for a good Beach cabin... and I heard some state campsites have cabins there. The inlaws aren't too young, and we don't have a trailer.

Which brings me to Portland. Of course, my wife wants to go shopping... so I'm looking for good places to go outlet shopping.

Try the Woodburn Company Stores south of Portland for outlet shopping. Many (if not most) of the popular Oregon campsites book up at least a year in advance...from what I understand. (There could be last minute cancellations.) You might want to check out homes that are rented out for tourists in the Seaside area. Many are right on the beach. Craigslist, or a local real estate agent, possibly would have listings. Have fun. I live on the Central Oregon coast and it is wonderful.

we've had several friends and relatives visit from overseas and one thing that's never failed to impress them is taking them to the beach one day, and then turning around and going over mt hood to the east side the next day. our guests have consistently been impressed by the contrast and density of experiences. also, i think for foreigners living in dense urban areas (as i would imagine japanese in-laws would be), just going over to the east side, with its huge expanses of emptiness is impressive. we've had lots of success taking people out to painted hills and along the road to john day.

If time and money aren't big objects, for added effect have a third day where you travel the gorge up to where windsurfing was born, and then a fourth day where you travel to southeast Oregon and visit the only known sunstone mine in the entire world (in a desert no less).

Biggest effect probably comes from taking 26 straight over Mt. Hood to eastern Oregon and seeing that all of this lush land is 20 minutes from high desert (which is itself an hour and a half from the beach and 20 minutes from skiing).

If he like nature though, it would be CRIMINAL to not take him down the Columbia River Historic Highway. Take the Lewis and Clark exit off of I-84 eastbound (immediately after crossing the Sandy River) and follow the signage.

As for the seculded beach area I would recommend the 3 capes scenic route There are several paths that lead you down into the ocean through thick flora along the way. My favorite town around those parts is Manzanita. A much smaller version of Cannon Beach with a very nice kept up image.

I know the people who built the place; they're total IKEA fans and that was back when the nearest one was in Seattle. Quite a drive for a bookcase.

This is a bit out of the way, but if you have extra time, you can take them to Bagby hotspring. It's a nice little hike and being Japanese, they probably like hot spring. (or maybe not, some Japanese people hate onsen.)
Just google bagby hotspring for direction.

Hi all,

Y'all might have seen me around before, though I mostly keep to the Texas sub-forum. I run a blog dedicated to promoting urbanism and transit in Fort Worth, Texas, called Fort Worthology. As you might expect, it's pretty much the only one of its kind around here, but surprisingly we're doing some quality urbanism and transit work here in the Panther City. I am also a member of: the City of Fort Worth Historic and Cultural Landmarks Comission Designation Committee and the Fort Worth South, Inc. Marketing Committee.

Fort Worth is not entirely dissimilar to Portland in a few respects - we have the same small block sizes, for example. We're also planning our own modern streetcar system to link Downtown, the Cultural District, and the Near Southside with a quality urban circulator.

Myself and the rest of us at Fort Worthology have long wanted to visit Portland, both for recreation and to take a look at all the ways your city builds and moves for our own site. So, we're planning to take a trip. What I'm curious is - is there anything in particular we should check out, from an urbanism, architectural, and transit perspective? Obviously, we're going to be going to Downtown and the Pearl, but beyond that we're still learning about what we might see in your city. I want to check out things like the Burnside Rocket and other infill developments, for example. Also take a look at the bicycle & small brewery cultures.

We're planning to spend a little over a week, so we should be able to see a decent amount. Thought I'd reach out to the Portlanders here on Skyscraperpage and get some input.
