This is a great idea. Micro breweries are enjoying explosive growth in Ontario. The LCBO can't keep up with the demand. Even a place like The 3 Brewers (Yonge Street, Toronto) could do well in Jackson Square. A brewed-on-premises pub with a decent menu would bring people to the area in the evenings and on weekends.

If the Jackson Square LCBO store improved its beer selections, it would see an immediate uptick in sales. No need to go to the mall on Barton (which is pretty good).

It really surprises me that there isn't one in a city this size. It's something that I'd love to frequent, or be involved in, if the opportunity ever arose.

I'd imagine the startup costs are fairly high on a brewery, though...

Some friends and I have looked into it and it is definitely doable. We're busy with other projects now, but if no one else does it we'll probably try again. As long as your beer isn't crap I think it is a no-brainer. I'm shocked no one has tried it, but you need some capital and Hamilton's problem is too many dreamers, not enough people with capital. Or people with capital willing to commit it without government assistance.

Nations Fresh Foods opening a preview of Hamilton flagship store (Emma Reilly, Hamilton Spectator, Aug 28, 2012)

Hamilton is about to get a sneak peak into its new downtown grocery store.

The very first Nations Fresh Foods grocery store – the same store that’s coming to Jackson Square in the spring – is opening in Woodbridge today. Like Hamilton’s store, it will have a deli, fish counters, a bakery, prepared foods section and salad bar.

Nations is under the banner of Oceans grocery, a small chain with two stores in Brampton and two in Mississauga.

Though Hamilton will be the second Nations Store, Jackson Square officials say Hamilton’s supermarket will be the flagship location.

Follow Emma Reilly on Twitter at @EmmaatTheSpec and watch thespec.com for updates.

Reminiscent of the aesthetic ennui of the Hess/York Barn, blended with that odd Mississaugan placelessness.

The subterranean warren ambience of Jackson Square (would that we had Woodbridge's airy, two-storey headroom) will be an interesting foil. Is it too much to expect artificial lighting pepped up by sun tunnels?

I get that it is nice that downtown Hamilton is getting a supermarket, and I get that it is somewhat noteworthy.

But there is something pretty sad about a reporter providing live play-by-play Tweets about the happenings at a grocery store in an altogether different town.

I had the exact same thought.

The magazine stand under 100 King West (UCS? between Tim Hortons and Laura Secord) has apparently closed. Although it managed to reopen not long after there was a flooding event, it did so with a reduced number of titles. Even so, there were always a surprising number of titles in that store, and some that you would never find anywhere else downtown, certainly in terms of tech/news/politics/art magazines.

Taken along with the savage slenderizing of the sister newsstand near the base of 110 King West, it's been a lousy few months for downtown shoppers who are also fans of print media.

I've got a question about this part of Jackson:

Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/9nDmg

a) Does this part of the mall have a different name?
b) What was the last thing in this section?

I think there was a Bank of Montreal there. Then they made a new one on Main Street and moved out. I noticed it again two Art Crawls ago when my daughter and I were walking on the roof. It would be a awesome space for a medium sized business.

The space is used occasionally for arts and performances but it is indeed, largely abandoned. You can still see the old "BMO Pavilion" lettering in some spots. I always thought a restaurant of an Indigo/Chapters would be an excellent fit for it.

Based on Anchor Bar twitter account they said they'll also open a Cheesecake Factory, "with a Canadian twist", at Jackson Square.
