There was some sort of cross-harbour fundraiser occuring on Wednesday that included two swimmers braving the harour;

And for kicks a short video taken from the same spot;

This postcard aerial view is great. I've been looking for one like this for a while:

crayolamom on flickr

Taken during the 1970s before the Maritime Centre expansion and before Spring Garden Road area development. Also visible is the now demolished 7 storey building that was located on Barrington adjacent to the Dennis Building on Granville.

Neat to see the old infirmary still there. There was a lot more surface parking the in the Dresden row area too.

There are a lot of notable buildings missing so this is really old. Purdy's, Fenwick isn't there and the gas station is still on the corner of Sackville (which is now an apartment building).

Also Sherwater is woods.

From looking at the photo I would place it somewhere around 1977-78. The metro centre is there and it opened in Feb 1978.

Looks like it's there to me.
If Shearwater were woods, that would date this picture to the early 20s

Interesting waterfront. Nothing but gravel pits aside from the few piers that were being used. That certainly has changed for the better.

Just imagine!

I bet the anti-development people would literally shit their pants if they saw this image.

I looked through spacing magazine's flickr and they have alternatives (i.e. if halifax had tons of trees and green space).

I believe this is the largest size they are sharing.

It's too bad the rink can't stay; I think it would look great! Looking down Quinpool makes me dream of taller buildings

Man that last picture really shows just how awesome Quinpool could be as a corridor with built up density along it. There is so much potential there.

Great photos though... I was trying to find my house but it is a couple of homes off to the south in that last pic! LOL

Those are great pictures of the skating oval. It makes me think of a stadium on the Commons. But I know it can't be done.

Halifax looks so tiny from the air.

Those buildings along the north end of the commons are a decent size when you are there in person.. but from here they look minuscule.

Fenwick there is nothing wrong with a dream! Just be prepared if it doesn't happen; but we can always dream. Trust me; if my dreams came true this city would be way different.

The buildings around the commons are typically in the 15 to 18 storey range if memory serves, but I don't believe they are governed by the rampart height maximum. So technically they could go higher.

And I completely agree about Quinpool - would be an awesome corridor, but I think the only way you could get it to work would be to take the street parking off Quinpool and build a few common parking areas and then have the commercial stretch back to Pepperell. I suspect they woudln't like that, but if someone had money; I'd say buy up properties on Pepperell too. Then you could build a buffer.

I wonder if attitudes about Quinpool have started to change with it getting more 'hip' like Agricola?
