I like the redone Regent Park plans quite a bit.

There's few places I was scared to be when I lived in Toronto (regularly walked at night around Sherbourne/Carlton, Jamestown, and lots of other neighbourhoods) but Regent Park was one place I wouldn't go - not that there was anything to do there, unlike Jamestown where there was.

TENANTS ESCAPE EARLY AFTERNOON APARTMENT FIRE

HAMILTON, ON – May 18, 2011 – Hamilton Emergency Services – Fire responded to fire in an 11 storey hi-rise apartment building located at 260 King Street East, Hamilton, at approximately 12:23 p.m. this afternoon. Upon arrival firefighters reported heavy smoke conditions at the 9th floor level of the building and requested that a second alarm be dispatched to assist with firefighting operations.

Firefighters conducted search and rescue operations and confirmed that the unit’s occupants had already safely evacuated the building prior to their arrival and then proceeded to quickly extinguish the fire. As a precaution, hydro service to the fire unit was shut down once the fire had been extinguished and overhaul completed.

The only reported injury as an indirect result from the fire was to an elderly woman who suffered a form of medical distress after having had walked down from her 11th floor apartment to the building’s lobby; she was treated by on scene Paramedics and subsequently transported to hospital. The building owner advised that the building was insured. The cause of the fire is suspected to be careless smoking which caused the occupants of the unit where the fire originated to lose their entire belongings as part of an estimated dollar loss of approximately $20,000.

There's finally a ground floor commercial tenant, a place called Accoutrements. Maybe the Gore building will get one soon as well, but I'm not holding my breath.

I heard this week that International Coffee will move into the ground floor of Gore Building. The 16 residential units are all occupied.

Awesome news.

As an aside, how is it possible that nothing's moved into the Annex Loft ground floor space after all these years? That's mental, even for Hamilton.

Probably because that stretch of Rebecca gets very little foot or car traffic and for the last decade it has been surrounded by the abandoned hulk of buildings directly across. Maybe the Lister reno will see a change.

Wow that's great. I wonder what kind of rents are getting charged for the Terraces on King and the Gore Buildings ground floor units. Maybe they are way higher than neighbouring units.

I expect they are above market as new publicly funded construction tends to be. The owners (in this case the city?) have to try to recoup their costs through the rent they charge and I doubt the retail spaces are subsidized. I wonder what the tax situation is on a city owned property?

I was looking at renting a unit in the Gore Building and unless the rents went up, they were pretty cheap. I was told $650+ for a one-bedroom which I think is pretty decent as it is a newly constructed building with central AC (I believe included in the rent). It was also one of the King facing units with the balcony doors. The building is managed by City Housing Hamilton.
