Those renders for the waterfront look great. In due time, that area will be completely transformed with the FDR memorial, new waterfront access, grad school campus, LIC towers, Domino Sugar Plant, and Hunters Point. Exciting times.

That's just an idea. But many years ago, someone came up with the idea of filling in the entire east river.

Mayor Bloomberg Narrows Field For New City Tech Campus

It’s down to four... maybe?

The city has narrowed its choices for a new city-subsidized high-tech university campus, which could end up on Roosevelt Island, down to four, knocking three contenders out of the race, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday.

“We had 27 applicants. We whittled it down to seven. I think we've told three that they’re not going to make it and that we’re working with the last four,” the mayor told an audience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Tuesday.

But when the mayor was pressed for details Wednesday on the ousted schools, he appeared to backtrack. “I don’t know that the four is the right number, incidentally," he told reporters at a press conference in Queens.

A spokeswoman for the mayor did not immediately respond to requests for clarification. The mayor refused to say Wednesday which bids are still in the running. "No," he told reporters, when asked point blank.

But the mayor did provide some hints on who might be left.

“Stanford is desperate to do it, I’m not exaggerating,” he said at MIT. “Cornell is desperate to do it. I'm not exaggerating there. There are a couple of other schools that have a really good chance as well.”

Hope Floats! Muncipal Art Society Revives Plans for East River Waterfront

Building booms come and developers go, but a good project has a way of sticking around. Times Square, Columbus Circle, Hudson River Park, Queens West, all have seen their ups and downs, all are in various states of repose.

Since the city and the United Nations reached a deal in October to hand over half of the Robert Moses playground in exchange for, among other things, $150 million for waterfront redevelopment, MAS has revived its plans for this piece of East River real estate. “There’s almost a new neighborhood being created, between Solow and the U.N.,” said Raju Mann, director of planning at the Municipal Art Society. “We need to create a vision for that neighborhood. Because this waterfront has really been neglected, a lot of people don’t even know it’s there.”

The idea was not to create a specific design but a framework that could influence the official planning effort, which is already in its formative stages. The city has hired the engineers at AECOM to come up with a study for potential redevelopment.

“The process of deciding what gets built here is just beginning, and we wanted to take an early role in helping shape that process,” Mr. Mann said. MAS has been reaching out not only to neighbors but also local institutions like the N.Y.U. Langone hospitals to form a broad coalition backing this new vision for the waterfront...

Pretty sad to see that stretch of the East Side as empty and deserted as it currently is. A jump start on the development there can't come soon enough.

Was at an Xmas party last night at my aunts apartment, and was talking to a board member of NY committee of economic development and he said in not so many words that it was between Stanford and Cornell, not surprisingly. I pressed him a bit but he stoned walled me, and it sounded like a final decision had already been made, but he shifted conversation to the Hudson Yards.

Obvious choice is Stanford.

Columbia, NYU, and Cornell will build elsewhere in the city. Manhattanville for the first of those three.

"As expected, the city officially announced that Cornell and partner Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have been selected to build an applied sciences and engineering campus on Roosevelt Island...

...a temporary off-site campus will open next year, and the first phase of the Roosevelt Island campus will be completed no later than 2017...

"Productive discussions are ongoing with other respondents" to the competition, including Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, and NYU, "and the possibility of additional science and engineering partnerships in the City is still open."

Pier 42 Shed Gets The Hook in Favor of Parkland

"The abandoned shed on Pier 42 just west of Corlear's Hook at Gouvernor Street will not be used as a way station for construction trucks and materials, after funding was secured to turn the Manhattan pier into a park and continuation of the East River Greenway around lower Manhattan. A press release from NY State Senator Daniel Squadron announced that a commitment has been secured to use $14 million to begin a master planning process to transform the pier into a park and demolish the large shed currently in place. The estimated cost of the total project is $40 million... "

Design Firm Chosen for East River 'Blueway' Project

Plans to build a greenway along the East River have captured much public and political attention in recent months. But a complementary proposal for an “East River Blueway," which officials first floated two years ago, is now gaining momentum.

WXY Architecture + Urban Design has been chosen as the lead designer for the project, which would create more opportunities for direct water access along the East River between the Brooklyn Bridge and East 38th Street.

A website detailing the project has also been launched, and a public forum is set for April 9 for residents of Community Board 6, which covers the area from East 59th to East 14th street, and Lexington Avenue to the East River.

"Our goal is to really bring the East River — the edge of the East River, what it looks like and feels like and what it does — into this century," Claire Weisz, founding principal of WXY, said in a video promoting the new Blueway project. "You see a lot of hard edges, and you don’t see many places to get on and off a boat or to touch the water, and there’s so much potential to do that."

Um.....no. We need some fillers, not a megatall, which a whole site is being dedicated to, right across town at Hudson Yards.

In Fact, New York tends to have a larger skyline impact based around the center of the city and not on its edges(even at the WTC, which originally sat on the edge of the island, had a whole neighborhood built right across the street from it to blend it in with the city). A lot of tenants love midtown views.

Imagine floating in a gondola through East Harlem. How about leisurely kayaking by Hell Gate, the East River’s most dangerous bend? What if signage alongside the FDR drive promoted neighborhood engagement in Jenny Holzer–style graphics? These somewhat outré civic solutions represent the first, second, and third place winners of the Reimagining the Waterfront competition, sponsored by Civitas, a citizen’s action group. More than 90 entrants from 25 countries entered the competition to address the crumbling East River Esplanade from 60th to 125th streets.

The three winners of the ideas competition address crucial aspects of rethinking the waterfront. The first place winner, Syracuse University architecture student Joseph Wood, dreamed up canals leading inland to integrate the Upper East Side and East Harlem. Second place winner Takuma Ono was no less ambitious, but he took a holistic approach that incorporated below-water ecosystems with practical engineering and a web of boardwalks on the water. Third place winner Matteo Rossetti envisioned strategically placed “writing the esplanade” modules, where the community could drop by and write down what they would like to see happen on that site. The modules could later be transformed into participants’ suggestions.

Rogers explained the unconventional scheme that took first place. “This was an ideas competition, and as such, part of the notion was to create intrigue and excitement about what the East Side could be,” he said. “It is ambition beyond traditional boundaries, beyond the scheme.” For his part, Wood said he was stunned that the jury selected his design, which was assigned as part of an architecture studio. “I was very surprised because they presented the competition like a basic nuts-and-bolts problem,” said Wood said by phone. “I think they took a step out of themselves to allow such a conceptual idea to win.”

The water flow of Wood’s interlocking canals would be regulated in part by gates and filtration equipment. Tiered plantings would filter storm water before flowing into the river-bound canals. In a telephone interview, Wood didn’t delve too deeply into the technical details, to say nothing of Upper East Side/East Harlem politics. “This is more about the big picture,” he said. “It could be refreshing in a way to envision a new realm of the city without having to worry about the politics. This is more to spark conversation.”
