Shangri-la is the first building in Vancouver to be significantly taller than anything built since the Royal Bank tower in 1973. Even 1 Wall is only 20 or so feet taller than the Royal Bank. Most of the tallest buildings in Vancouver are about the same height because of the 450 foot height limit, but now after 35 years Shangri-la breaks this barrier and blows all other Vancouver buildings away!

Nice! The Hotel Georgia and Jameson House will nicely balance the skyline from that angle.

I was just down below the tower a couple of hours ago and I do have to say this building is very tall now. Looking at it from Main St skytrain station it looks absolutely huge. It is taller than One Wall center given the fact that Wall Center is on higher ground elevation too. I counted 55 completed floors and to the top of construction they are beginning floor 56. It is also taller than the Harbour Center spire's airspace. The Harbour Center is 558 ft to the spire. Shangrila should be now about 550 ft tall. That is 30 ft taller than the observation deck of the Space Needle in Seattle. When the 56th floor is completed Shangrila will be the tallest freestanding structure in the city. In otherwords...just one more floor. At this point it has about 100 ft to go until the roof is reached. The crane cab should reach about 700 ft once built to the top.

Hey officedweller how tall will the Hotel Georgia and Jameson House be?

In a way its too bad that its a residential tower. If it were office the majority of the lights would be on all night long, and for a tower that towers over the rest of the buidings in Vancouver, it would have been a really cool landmark at night.

That is one thing that bothers me about Vancouver, when you drive downtown at night so many of the skyscrapers are relatively dark, compared to the few office buildings that we have which light up the sky at night.

^But it's better on the environment to have those lights turned off!

not only that but downtown lacks power infrastructure. the transformers we have need to be upgraded, and more need to be added. i remember this past summer, they were worried about a downtown blackout with everyone turning on their air con - and it's only going to get worse, with even more condo developments, the Canada Line, and the new convention centre.

Global warming = less heating

Climate change of any kind will result in increases of some energy expenditures and decreases of others. Global warming actually probably means a net decrease in energy costs for a city in higher lattitudes

Hotel Georgia is:
Roof of uppermost occupied floor: 487.1ft
Decorative roof:
- elevator machine room: 498.8ft
- lower truncated fin wall: 504 ft
- higher truncated fin wall: +/- 516.5 ft
http://vancouver.ca/commsvcs/plannin...HoweStreet.pdf

Jameson House isn't a "higher buildng" but is still pretty tall:
Top of parapet: 116.0m (377 ft).
Top of elevator core: 115.3m
That's taller than the Terminal City Club Tower on the north side of Hastings.

I'm disappointed the holographic squares don't light up at night.

What is going to be the big surprise? Or are they going to light up the squares on opening night???

Who's going to the Western Final?????

A whole bunch of us are, and we're all glad that we won't be "wet & cold" like those suckers in Seattle.
