New Amazon HQs

While it isn't likely to end up here, it's fun to fantasize about.
It'd probably end out in meridian though... We don't have the space for 50,000 extra employees in downtown... even if we built up. Seattle has a hard time coping with the shear amount of people that commute in each day, and they are more up for the challenge infrastructure-wise then Boise.
It could go out by Micron though.

Amazon plans to build second, ‘equal’ headquarters outside Seattle
Quote:
Amazon.com says it will build a second corporate headquarters, equal to the company’s home base in Seattle, in another North American city.
The e-commerce giant, which employs about 40,000 people in the city [Seattle] after a hiring boom and urban build-out with little precedent in modern American history, is searching for a second home.

Here's a MarketWatch article that mentions Boise as not meeting the population criteria. Nice to see that Boise is at least on people's minds in regard to this development

"Some business-friendly metro areas, including Omaha, Neb. (sorry, Warren Buffett); Boise, Idaho; and Madison, Wis., don’t meet the population criteria."

5th and Front Parking Garage

Clay Carely's parking garage proposal went through another pass of the design review. They are currently only pursuing the parking garage for construction with a building wrap (hotel, residential, or office) at a later time.

I like it. The garage has a groovy vibe.

according to IBR, Adare Manor is due to break ground, with completion expected by end of next year. together with the St Luke's facility, maybe this will spur additional development on the west end:

ugh, I saw that. I'm all for smart growth, but that would be too much too soon. with 50K workers, add another 150K for family members and you have 200k more people in the valley in a hurry, not to mention the additional 350-400k of people moving here to service the amazon and their new employees.

we'd double the population much faster than the city can accommodate.

I'd prefer steady growth that we can keep up with.

This reminds me of the newer apartments buildings in the Lusk District.

if they changed the rust brown to blue or gray--or even a brighter color like yellow or red--it'd be much nicer and happier.

curious how the hotel/residential structure will "wrap" around this--would the new building essentially hide the south facade of the garage? will be interesting to see how they plan to do that, and how high they'd go.

this garage also only fills half of that block, leaving the back half open for future development (perhaps Clay will build his long-ago-proposed 20-floor condo there after all... or at least we can hope.)

Carley should be commended for putting up the sweet 5th and Idaho Apt building a few blocks away from here, but this hideous garage is a major disappointment considering the kinds of quality human oriented development going on a block away in the Central Addition. If the current residential real estate climate isn't encouraging enough, I'd be surprised to see any kind of wrap ever put on this thing. Thus just when we want to encourage true urban land uses that might help morph the Front St highway into an actual urban boulevard, we get instead this monument to the car.

This^^^ x1000 Are the people approving these projects stuck in the 70s? Maybe we need an influx on youth on these boards??

More high tech moving downtown. Kount plans to grow to nearly 200 employees. Does anyone have updated numbers of how many high tech jobs are now in downtown? This industry is growing fast in Boise. Then there is Simplot...I believe the new World Headquarters should be near 800 employees and it seems like that if you ever get stuck in traffic on Front.

Kount will move across the river and into downtown
Quote:
Kount, one of Boise’s newer tech companies, is the latest to commit to downtown office space.

Located on Lusk Street just across the Boise River from downtown since its founding in 2008, Kount intends to occupy the 35,000-square-foot, four-story office building variously known as the Langroise Building, John Alden Building and 10th and Main.

8th Corridor Improvements

CCDC at their meeting last week, discussed the upcoming improvements coming to 8th street. These are partially apart of the Central District close out as well as South 8th Street improvements. For those that want to look, the 8th presentation starts on page 76. I've tried to par back the photos (if you can believe it...), if you want to see more, dive into the CCDC document
Another item in the presentation but not posted here, is the way-finding signage update.

CCDC Presentation:
http://www.ccdcboise.com/wp-content/...-Board-PPT.pdf

South 8th St:
http://www.ccdcboise.com/wp-content/...nal-8.5x11.pdf
http://www.ccdcboise.com/wp-content/...esentation.pdf

Overview:

Central District:
New scramble intersections on 8th St @ Main, Idaho and Bannock
Protected bikes lanes on Idaho St. where the old transit lanes were
Various Capitol Blvd. streetscape to match the standards
Replacement trees on part of 8th (not sure if it's just that stretch or all trees)
New historical lighting
New overhead pendant lighting and banners
Retractable bollards on 8th @ Main and Idaho
Public WIFI, up and down 8th

Central District Alleys:
New pavement
Relocated dumpsters and service elements
New pendant lighting
Privately: seating, pocket parks

South 8th St:
Lighting on 9th Bridge
Paver intersection @ 8th and Fulton
Tensegrity landmark @ 8th and Fulton
Simplot alley will also be upgraded with bricks, lighting, public art

(sorry for the long post, I'm just excited for the improvements )

Confirmed ground breakage: Site work has begun as of Tuesday 9-19. It's 2 buildings, A = 168,000 sf and B =19500 sf, at least 146 units, possibly 166 units the permit is unclear on that to me. Plus an accessory retail project: "Building A also includes a 2,122 sq. ft. area for a future Restaurant and a 3,509 sq. ft. space for a future mercantile use."

http://pdsonline.cityofboise.org/pds...08261527589900

Related and right down the street is New Path Community Housing Project "To demolish existing 6,061 sf restaurant building and to construct a new 34,249 sf, 4-story, 41-unit multi-family apartment building and site improvements."

That's the former Twin Dragon at 2200 W Fairview. I saw some clean up work around there but little other progress at PDS.

http://pdsonline.cityofboise.org/pds...id=BLD17-02377

EDIT: The clean up work appears to have been done for a ground breaking ceremony and/or a press conference. A day or two after the clean up a large rental tent appeared on site. Which raises the question, why didn't the owners clean that site up before? All summer it sat full of weeds and covered in graffiti.

Green Infrastructure in the Central Addition
Quote:
Boise’s first LIV District in the Central Addition was designed to act as a laboratory to allow the city, residents and businesses to test some cutting-edge sustainability practices. If you’ve noticed construction around Broad Street recently, you likely saw the installation of green infrastructure. At the heart of the LIV District, Broad Street represented an opportunity to not only rebuild a street, but to invest in technology that will result in a cleaner river. Let’s look at some of Broad Street’s “greener” features.
