Otis Selected for Landmark Hudson Yards Development

March 23, 2015

Quote:
Otis has entered into a multimillion-dollar agreement with Related Companies to supply elevator and escalator units for the new Hudson Yards development in Manhattan's West Side. As part of its contract, the world's largest manufacturer and maintainer of people-moving products will provide 73 units for 30 Hudson Yards, a 92-story, 2.6 million-square-foot tower that will be among the first to be constructed at the site. Founded by the inventor of the safety elevator, Otis is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp.

The Hudson Yards project is being developed by Related Companies and Oxford Properties Group. On-site elevator and escalator work is expected to begin in the first half of 2016.

BUILDING BLOCKS
In an age of digital renderings, Richard Tenguerian’s handcrafted architectural models continue to rise above

Text by Ian Volner

Quote:
.....Among his recent commissions are models for two of New York’s highest-profile, and most closely scrutinized, developments: Hudson Yards and One Vanderbilt, both master-planned by the firm Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF). For Hudson Yards, the giant mixed-use complex on the city’s far west side, Tenguerian’s team has been enlisted to replicate every component of the intricate scheme. Earlier this year KPF came back again, asking for a new rendering of one of the buildings’ lobbies. The turnaround was a mere three days. “It’s always when I’ve planned a vacation,” says Tenguerian, laughing.

Yet to be approved, One Vanderbilt is a supertower that would rise next to Grand Central Terminal. If it’s green-lighted, Tenguerian may be to thank. “With daring design, people will insist, ‘This isn’t buildable,’” Tenguerian says. “But what we do is very convincing.”

I like that model. Preliminary for phase 2, but an indication of the density at stake. I know they are shooting for a 2024 target date in terms of the whole complex, so I'm hoping they will reveal those residential towers for phase 2 by next year. Could very well be some potential supertalls if the market holds.

Thanks for posting those pics nyguy! I've been waiting for an aerial view of this amazingly complex site for a while. This might be the best we can get until a webcam or flyover.

When can we expect vertical construction to start? Also, I hope this tower rises immensely faster than 10HY since it is mainly steel.

The first few stories are incredibly complex steel though so I doubt it will be going anywhere fast until it starts to get well out of the ground.

This site is up there with the WTC as one of the most complex. The logistics and coordination at the site are just incredible. Look at that insanity.

It's already partially above street level, I've been posting photos.

It's very impressive, and we're only looking at half of the railyard development.

Here's what they had to say about "Charlie".

This week we said farewell to Joanie, our red Manitowoc 18000 crane. Since joining us nearly a year ago, Joanie has moved 5 million pounds of steel and helped the platform construction get underway. Before she left, Joanie made sure we were in good hands and spent a few weeks building Charlie, a white Favco 1280 tower crane with a lifting capacity of 100 tons and a reach of more than 120 feet.

Charlie is already hard at work, literally picking up where Joanie left off. He plans to stay with us until October when the entire Eastern Yard platform will be complete.

He said the plaza in the center will feature a $200 million sculpture that will be announced next summer.

"It will be the icon of New York for the 21st century," he said. "It will be to New York what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris."
Still waiting to see what this is, and how it will change the dynamics of the complex.

This current view from the top of the Coach tower gives an indication of how great the views will be (of course, there will be other towers in there)...
