Took a glance at the front page of Metro today... apparently Ichiban is going to get its first renovation since it opened in 1973.

At this point, their outdated interior has probably become part of the attraction to that place... if they had left it for another 20 years it would have probably been considered a heritage treasure. But alas.

Never made it there but it must have developed quite a following... some of my friends had a similar reaction.

Their website indicates they plan on re-opening somewhere else. Just closing the current location. Jerk chicken tacos were pretty good.

Garry's Deli in Winnipeg Square is closing. Didn't get a chance to read the sign posted on the door as I passed by but caught a glimpse - thanked their customers over 37 years of service.

That comes as a bit of a surprise... that place has a pretty solid following judging by the fact that it's busy every day around lunch, and their products pop up frequently at catered meetings and functions.

It was never a favourite of mine as I found the location in the bowels of Winnipeg Square to be totally charmless, but I'm sure the fact that you didn't have to go outside was a main attraction for many in the area.

Garry's Deli was also very popular with the smoking set. When places faced the choice of banning smoking or banning children, they banned children.

At one time they had a quick server coffee place on the other side of Shopper's. That closed to make way for the Shopper's expansion.

Hope that whatever replaces them is better and hopefully it doesn't take two years to renovate the place like Pizza Hotline did.

I was surprised on how busy the Pizza Hotline location is.

It's not that often something new opens up at Portage and Main.

It seems like Winnipeg Square Pizza Hotline also has very limited seating.

They're really busy at lunch and there's always quite a few tables full when I go by 5:00 - 5:30 each day. They're open until 7:00pm.

I walked by there on my evening dinner break last week and it was busy with customers that looked like they were going to the Jets game after.

I guess the quality is better than their takeout pizza.

Back in the early 90's I used to go to this place and enjoyed it. On a whim I went there a few months ago and it was terrible. Portion size and quality had been seriously eroded. It was a major disappointment. While I am never happy to see a long term establishment close, this place was a shell of its former self.

Walking past Pizza Hotline in Winnipeg Square towards the end of lunch today it looked like interest in the location has cooled off already.

A&W on Portage Avenue

The A&W at 3095 Portage Avenue has now closed. It was the first A&W to open in Canada. I believe the space will be converted into a Wendy's. The new A&W, near the Grace Hospital, hasn't opened yet.

This is my neighbourhood. My wife is disappointed that it's yet another pizza joint because she was hoping there would be a sushi restaurant... we are probably the biggest sushi desert in the entire City of Winnipeg, which is shocking because you'd think one would do very very well here.

I am going to write to my MLA and demand action on the Riverview sushi desert!!!
