A downtown movie theater would be awesome, but it's really tough to make it work nowadays unless you're a multiplex. Very few people want to go to a movie theater with one screen where the seats are mostly empty and there's only one movie playing.
Agreed, and the Municipal Auditorium could have a large multiplex built within its shell... and there's plenty of potential free parking around it.

If a multiplex will go anywhere it will be on the old Carrolton Shopping Center in Mid City. I dont think a large multiplex would work downtown

What I love about Canal Place is you have to 18+ to get in. Its so nice to watch movies without obnoxious kids!

#2 is probably the Josephine Lofts project (it has the same number of units). As I said before, that's the old brick building behind the Wal-Mart on Tchoupitoulas.

Apparently, the retail portion of the development was canceled or postponed.

Does that building have the old rusty sign on the top of it?

I haven't noticed a sign.

I'm talking about this building:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=joseph...Xw1feQuUWNc6bg

The rusty shed buildings surrounding the warehouse were due to be converted to retail use. Hopefully that part of the plan still remains.

LSU Academic Medical Center news, unofficial from LSU higher-ups. Be on the lookout for "official" ground-breaking with Jinal on April 18th. Also word is that all the land is bought and money is there for the project to go forward (not sure if I believe this one). Also apparently there are two new structures going up on Tulane ave on the LSU med school side, both are a few lots from St. Joseph's on the west side (going away from claiborne). Sorry don't have links or details about the buildings but they will be administrative buildings. Will keep a look out for any more news.
Since I posted the above there has been a rendering posted on the lot around the 1900 block of Tulane ave for a new LSUHSC clinic building. Mathes Brierre is the architect but they don't have a rendering online yet that I can find. Didn't have a camera to take a picture. Looks to be anywhere from 4-6 stories, mostly glass exterior. Hopefully the adjacent lot is next with a new administrative building that should be much larger because its a much bigger lot. Also groundbreaking has indeed been scheduled for 11:00 am on Monday for the new hospital, I'm sure it will be a big hoopla with the governer etc...

I know someone the developer had approached about investing in project. The project sounds great, and it is all market rent. Top floors have river views, and there are plans to build a pool. Rent is projected to be around $1200. However, I do not know too many people that would want to live 12 feet from the back of wal-mart.

I'd consider it if the rent was under $1000.

This city is really pretty expensive for housing, which is kinda surprising. It's definitely more expensive than Chicago. I suppose gas is cheaper here, but it all washes out - you can pay $850 in Chicago for a 1-bedroom with train access and live entirely without a car.

Ok it does have a sign on top of it that is really cool...

BTW I saw Zipcar went public on Friday with an IPO... really think one would work here! Trying to get a meeting with Loyola/Tulane about it.

Also found this article on the hospital itself. Looks like they plan to move forward with the money they have (900+ million), and still waiting approval for the rest. Actual site clearence etc. planned to start June 1st.

Also, this article confirms that the Palace hotel on claiborne and canal will thankfully be torn down.

the state says it will pay to move the McDonogh 11 historic building if the school board wants to.
So... now we've just got to convince the school board of this building's value. They're already trying to tear down Wheatley.
