Mall of America? West Edmonton Mall? Both offer non shopping experiences that attract many people.

Not to mention in the US many malls have products you can't buy here in canada, at lease at reasonable rates or via online means.

Vegas outlet malls are a great example of this.

Aside from department stores there isn't many mall stores down there that haven't opened here in the past 5 years (Alberta anyways), the prices are still cheaper down there, and the sports stores are better... but If I'm south and the we have the same store at home, I'll wait and shop at home now.

What is at the Vegas Outlets that isn't in Calgary... aside from Polo?

Almost all the famous streets in the world and the places we love to hang out in when visiting cities, are alive because people are down there shopping, dining, etc.
If you take retail out, alot of animated places in our cities would be dead overnight. So retail is a lot more important than many people may think, and when in a different city it is fun to check out the different offerings available there.
However those unique offerings are being made more rare, when stores feel they need to open in every city on the planet.

Saskatoon's Midtown Plaza is attempting the same. They didn't renew 5 leases in the mall of lower end stores (Randy River, Stiches etc.)

So far Sephora seems to be the only one secured. Forever 21 looks like a big possibility. H&M and Guess are also rumoured. I guess time will tell.

Sunny Street Cafe to begin cooking up breakfast in Canada

By Tori Floyd | Daily Brew

Breakfast fans in Canada will soon be waking up to a new face in town.
Sunny Street Cafe, formerly Rise & Dine, is expanding into Canada later this year.

The U.S. franchise signed a deal that will allow it to open a minimum of 40 locations across Western Canada over the next 10 years. Edmonton will see the first Sunny Street Cafe in Canada in late summer or early fall.

Canada is no stranger to all-day breakfast proprietors, with franchises in Ontario like Golden Griddle or Sunset Grill and national chains like Montreal-based Cora's, or Calgary-based Smitty's.

The country has also seen a few U.S. restaurants make the journey north, such as the 24-hour Denny's in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.

But Sunny Street Cafe thinks it can bring something different to Canada.

"The atmosphere of our restaurants is comfortable, inviting and reflects the surrounding community's personality," said Scott Moffitt, president of Sunny Street Cafe, in a press release. He said the restaurants will offer local foods and produce.

Sunny Street Cafe is also keeping positive in the face of competition due to news the foodservice industry is growing faster in Canada than it is in the U.S. The breakfast sector in particular is seeing plenty of growth, as are 'fast-casual' restaurants, making now an ideal time for Sunny Street Cafe to attempt international expansion.

Looking at the menus for this Sunny Street place- it looks like the menu at Cracker Barrel.

America, a country north of you yearns for your Qdoba, your Panda Express, your Uno. Please stop sending us shit like this.

No brand recognition and what looks like terrible food. They won't last six months.

I looked on the Qdoba web site and they have franchise opportunities in all 4 western provinces. For Manitoba it is looking in Brandon and Winnipeg.

The New Uptown Mall in Victoria looks beautiful! I love the art deco accents etc. It's nice to see an inspired design instead of a spandrel box.

Canadian Tire Corp. Ltd. said Monday it is buying sporting goods retailer Forzani Group Ltd. for $26.50 a share in cash.

The deal is worth $771 million, excluding Forzani debt and the 1.3 million shares or four per cent of the company that Canadian Tire already owns.

Calgary-based Forzani Group has more than 500 retail outlets, including under the Sport Chek and Sports Experts banners. The company has annual revenue of roughly $1.4 billion.

This had been rumored for a few years now, looks like it's finally about to happen.
