Anything that can save me a trip, or frequent trips to Natal/Grandview Hwy is fine by my book.

I don't think that that Walmart Supercenter will be shutting down though.

It'll still remain convenient for serving Northern Burnaby area (even with the one at Lougheed mall).

The Metrotown one will bring a much needed outlet to service the South Burnaby area in an location that's already heavily trafficked by people shopping or just visiting the mall.
It's a win-win for both them and the mall.

In other mall news, apparently the Muji store is doing so well, they are now expanding by way of cannibalising three of their next door neighbours.

It's from the Retail Insider.
What I found surprising is the fact that they are gobbling up the Uncle Tetsu's Ice cream store that only just opened recently and seemed to be super-popular with lots of line-ups almost every single time I've passed by.
I wonder if they'll be getting a different location elsewhere in the mall.

Vancouver in general seems to have been very kind to Muji's though.
Both the Metrotown store and the Robson street flagship store (which is their largest location in all of North America) are both doing gangbuster sales since they both opened (hence the Metrotown expansion, I guess).

But then again, retail in general overall is doing pretty well in BC in particular and in Canada - something I found a bit surprising given the death of the big Box stores (the Sears, and the Target's etc) in North America thanks to Amazon, no doubt.

Those neighbours won't be around for long.

There's around 5 or 6 towers in total, currently in different stages of rezoning/permit application processes for that pocket and corner between Patterson Skytrain Station and the Library, on the north side of Central Blvd.

It'll be a nice little dense cluster to bookend the Western end of the Mall/Station Square to go with the Marlborough cluster of 7-8 towers (when complete) towards the Eastern side just past Bonsor park and the Rec. center towards Royal Oak.

Uncle Tetsus is a cheesecake store isn't it? I've heard from people they didn't seem it was worth the hype and wouldn't bother to buy again

If it has lines they probably need a better spot, that one must cause a bottleneck being so close to the entrance, probably moving to a bigger spot in the mall?

ron,
I think I might be a little too old for the age range they're looking for (kids) - and I haven't skated for decades so it could be a little embarrassing...

Uncle Tetsu is so popular that there may be works for them to relocate to another store in Metrotown?

You need to understand that well-managed City Centre malls are doing very well in all of Canada, and yes, even in the States and the rest of the world.

People just hate the hassle of lining up. If not for the queue, the cheesecake would taste all the sweeter.

That's the benefit of having a mall owner, rather than strata-titled commercial space.
The landlord can move tenants around - probably paying for their new leasehold improvements and some free rent for the inconvenience.

i think people are expecting cheesecake like they get here, the heavy rich stuff. This looks light and fluffy. I haven't had a chance to try it myself. I did watch another video this girl waited 4 hours at the metrotown store, 4 hours! and she said she didn't like it that much

I don't get it.

I don't get lining up for literally HOURS, for something you don't absolutely need (e.g. driver's license, nailing down a home,....etc...) just to buy something that's more of a fad, than anything else - regardless of whatever it may be.

iPhones, Smartphones, cheesecake, szechuan dipping sauce,......

I don't care how delicious it is or how many thingamajigizmos it has,....
Who has that kind of time on their hands?

Apparently the people in line are people that have that kind of time on their hands. Must be telling that there is nothing better to do in this city.

Peoples willingness to stand in line for things here never ceases to amaze me.

I just cant do it, I find it fascinating that people would be willing to invest the time.

You line up for hours to go through the US/Canadian border or at the airport, don't ya? If you want something bad enough, you WILL line up for it.

I'm sure there would be a massive line-up when free money is offered.

You gotta know that people value or prioritize things differently.

I lined up for 6 hours to see Star Wars The Phantom Menace lol.

Anyway that new tower near Patterson looks good and I've always liked those gold coloured metro towers, they look good on a grey day

I bet that's a line-up you don't look back on too fondly in retrospect.

That's one movie that's really NOT aged well.

The last (non-essential) line-up I remember being a part of was one to see Santa at the mall.

I was 2 or 3 years old at the time and I only remember being absolutely petrified of the (at the time, seemingly scary)guy, and bawling and crying hysterically and embarrassing my parents (I guess?).

Maybe that's where my distaste for line-ups originates from.

What a hypocrite is, after presiding over the loss of so many affordable rentals. Election Year conversion!

The City of Burnaby is signalling a major change of course in its strategy to redevelop the Metrotown area, as it seeks to become the first municipality in B.C. to implement new rental-only zoning powers.

The city also hopes to strike deals that would guarantee new homes at similar rental rates for individuals displaced in so-called “demovictions,” according to Mayor Derek Corrigan.
Burnaby city council made the first move in this new plan at a hastily scheduled special council meeting Thursday morning. Councillors voted to rescind first reading they gave to two proposals that were scheduled to go to public hearing on July 24.

Council gave initial approval in April to two highrise buildings proposed by Anthem Properties Group. The towers would have replaced 177 rental units in three walk-up buildings at 6444 Willingdon Ave and 4241 Wilson Ave. in Metrotown.
The proposals included 30 units of not-for-profit rental housing.

But that wasn’t enough, Corrigan said.

Councillors sent the rezoning applications back to staff with the goal of having as many as half guaranteed to be non-market rental units in perpetuity.

Corrigan said the special council meeting was scheduled after Coun. Colleen Jordan learned on Friday the details of new provincial legislation that allows cities to zone land specifically to be only for rentals. Until then, he said, they didn’t know they could zone a portion of units, and even specific floors of a building, to be rental-only...

You mean flaming hypocrite

Oh suuure they didn't know they could zone for rentals - because nowhere else in the region has had any newly built rental buildings in the last decade...
