Oh here we go. So because I am not parroting the narrative of western war hawks, it means I’m simping for Russia, am a tankie, and have not read up on history? That is extremely insulting and condescending and I don’t appreciate it. I absolutely understand the history and it’s that history which is why I don’t think countries like ours and the US should be spending incredible amounts of money when things are so bad in our own countries, especially the US. Russia wants parts or all of Ukraine and is no threat to taking over Europe but what America and NATO is doing in Russia is risking World War 3. Is defending a foreign nation really worth risking nuclear annihilation to you?. It is not our responsibility to defend Ukraine nor are we going to do anything significantly to dampen Russia’s ambitions. All this military support for Ukraine is doing is delaying the inevitable while causing countless deaths from the battles (and incredible profits for military industrial complex).
You might want to consider whether it’s you who needs to do some reading if you think the US’s primary military aspirations is to
prevent imperial aggression. They are THE prevailing aggressive imperial world power and have for decades intervened in other countries, leaving a long and wide trail of bodies behind (not to mention their treatment of Indigenous populations going back centuries), to ensure their power and access has been maintained (to discuss Ukraine and Russia without fully understanding this without a homer's mentality removes import context and perspective that you are accusing me of lacking). Next time, try to argue your points without accusations of someone repeating talking points or not reading enough. That’s not how you debate and is extremely weak. If you want to learn more about this conflict from an actual left perspective,
here’s a great discussion I just listened to where the hosts cover Vaush’s accusations of another show being weak on Putin and Russia much like you and others are doing here. It’s getting old and needs to stop. If our actions are just and reasonable, then they should be able to be debated on their own merits. I absolutely support Ukraine’s right to self-determination but the whole notion of us being responsible for the defence of a foreign nation is imperialist in itself and frankly, a poor allocation of precious resources as our own public services crumble and people go without homes and food here because, as I mentioned, there's always enough money for war but not for these things.
Btw, you might want to get out and talk to people about this. Read about people who are critical about our role in this conflict. You might find that it’s not just some people on the far right who want to put an end to military interventionism.
When asked in a recent poll what people thought Ukraine should do, 23% of Canadians want negotiations now (26% of people being unsure), while the amount of people wanting us to support this fight with money and equipment as dropped around 10 points year-over-year. More and more Canadians, despite being supportive of Ukraine, realize that there is nothing much we can or should do militarily.
I thought we were done with discussing this but I’ll keep responding as people do. Let’s just try to keep the personal attacks out of it. We were just literally talking about that, dude lol
