I know right? Though if you read the article, the head says they're exploring their options. I think this is just one option, but it looks like they did purchase the site and will develop something there if they can. Hopefully they do something with it and get rid of that stupid parking lot. I am enjoying some of the parking lots in River North/Gold Coast area actually getting developed. There's no excuse for having so many parking lots there nowadays.

No wonder why the neighborhoods are so lacking in dense development. You have to fight off a fucking den of lions to build anything substantial in size...
Believe me, it was brutal having to sit through the Hawthorne Neighbors meeting and listen to people try and dictate every single aspect of the design (down to how the entrance atrium looked!)--at many points I wanted to remind everyone that this isn't their development and that there are private developer's rights that have to be preserved. However, as long as the approval process involves receiving community input (which effectively I don't have the ability to change), and that community input is going to be monopolized by those who would love nothing more than to whittle down developments like this to some status quo BS, you can bet that I'm going to play ball.

^^ Not only that, we also can't get suckered into the intellectually lazy trap of, 'it's all subjective, everyone has their own opinion, blah blah blah....some people think the earth is 6,000 years old. I don't mean to sound undemocratic, but it would be so nice if we could drop the harmful pretense of everyone's design 'opinion' being equal....

Awesome! Get rid of all the parking lots. Next, the garages. Then subtract a lane from every street and bring back streetcars and pedestrian boulevards. We can pay for it by charging downtown drivers a $50 toll, coming and going. And free healthcare! Equal rights! Negative income tax! I might have gone overboard!

Seriously though, it's great seeing surface lots being gobbled up downtown. It's getting harder to think of any that remain.

Another reason the Belmont/Clark proposal will get built: It will be replacing a couple of businesses owned by Mark Thomas (also owns the Alley). Thomas has announced that he'll be running against Tunney in the next election. His advertisement in the reader decryed the changing face of Lakeview as well as the "monstrous 11 story building" proposed on his site.

Of course Tunney is going to stick it to him on this. I think these guys hate each other.

^ Really? Very interesting indeed. So approving this is Tunney's way of sticking it to his political rival.

Density by spite, then. Oh well, I'll take it...

"Thomas and the current alderman, Tom Tunney, have clashed a number of times in the past over such issues as area sewer main construction and whether a Cook County assistant state’s attorney bit one of Thomas’ employees. Thomas has hinted for a while that he planned on running for elected office, although he told DNAinfo.com that his decision goes beyond any past issues with Tunney.

Recently, however, a 10-story, $50 million retail and residential tower has been slated for the corner of Belmont and Clark, which would force three business owned by Thomas to move."

It's certainly better than it was, but depending on what you mean by "downtown" there are certainly quite a lot remaining to be built on.

A block north of that site, for example. A block west. Two blocks north. A block southwest. Two blocks west. Three blocks west. State and Erie. Two blocks northwest. The lot behind the YMCA. The lot next to the YMCA. The lots on either side of VanBuren at Wabash. Lots at Illinois and St. Clair and Illinois and Columbus and Illinois and Park. At Grand and Fairbanks. Wacker and Vanburen. Not to mention at least a half dozen lots west of Orleans in River North.

But, yeah, that list used to be probably three times as long, so it's definitely an improvement.

Any news on 167 West Erie? Last time I walked past the shuttered LaSalle Power Company, I saw a notice indicating it as he future home of Gino's East.
I assume the 167 W. Erie project is waiting on the Gino's relocation? Anything else holding this one up?

I remember hearing forever ago that the Gino's on Ontario and Wells was going to turn into a big ole apartment building or something. What happened with that?

Random question guys but other than large financial costs, what are the reasons there aren't more subway lines and ramps in River North/Streeterville? I've always wondered this

^ Question is more suited to the transportation thread.

--------------------------

In addition to the Wells Street bridge, Division Street has also finally reopened (only 1 lane each way) between LaSalle and Clark.

--------------------------

The surface lot at Surf & Sheridan now has construction barricades around it:

Updated November 14, 2013
Current work
- Strip asphalt and trees.
- Probe for caissons.
November 18, 2013
- Caisson equipment is moved onto the site.
- Drill rig assembly begins.
- Construction Trailer installed.
Week of November 25, 2013
- Caisson drilling begins.
The website has a construction webcam too. Some of these construction cams have so much better resolution than a couple years back, I'm worried they might put Harry out of business...
