The Schaber's Cafeteria building currently stands at 622 S. Broadway. I'm sure the postcard predates this wonderful building.

The elaborate grillwork on the facade appears in the interior arches as well. This must have been a stunning place!

That's correct. He was his Chef and put together the original menu for the place. Not sure when he left though.

Not really noirish, but cool anyway. Bert had a lot of friends and in 1938 they decided to show him how much. It's solid copper with silver plate. Weights 19 lbs. I've been told the names engraved are mostly LA business men and local politicians who favored the Paris Inn and Lucca's. This is the best I've found so far. It shows Desmond's department store in 1925 with the predecessor to Schaber's on the right.

LAPL date this picture as 1935, but it's obviously much earlier. On the left you can clearly see "622" and most of the word "MARKET" (I'm assuming it's the end of Broadway Palace Market). It's a shame the picture isn't a little wider.

Bert's place Lucca on 5th and Western. Bert's nephew Lawrence ( my dad ) was the general manager from 1945 until it closed in 1955. How sad a fast food place sits where it used too.

Yes, the Masonic Temple is elusive to find photos. I used to HAVE TO GO with my parents to their Masonic meetings and wait for them. We used to park by the Herald Express building and walk over to the Temple. I remember sitting in the library on the second floor looking out and down at the Kelly Kar Ko. across the street. I could look down on the wires for the street cars which would spark sometimes when a street car passed. In the basement was a Ballroom Dance business, I would peep in on them from time to time. Some of the lodge meeting rooms were plain but the Commandry Room was large with a pipe organ and stage. Sometimes they had entertainment other times it was lodge business. Their were rooms for large dinners which I still can remember, even faces of people that I knew. All Gone Now...
