IMO a lot of it is that Houston's DT office buildings follow different proportions than ours do, their width scaling with their height. All those bulky buildings bunched together screws our sense of scale up, and there's really not much mid-range height building up to it. From many angles their DT is wall-like.
Meanwhile Austin's two tallest are skinny residential point towers, which emphasizes their verticality and allows them to feel tall without dwarfing the shorter buildings around them. I agree that when 6x gets built (which is bulkier but still not the bulk of Houston's giants) it will put into perspective the fact that the Austonian and Indy aren't really all that tall or big.
